England 2018 bid - Possible Stadiums?

Recommended Posts

Hopefully they will build some modern lookin stadiums if we win the bid for 2018, like they have done at Japan/Korea and Germany.

Stadia, God damn it! Stadia! You don''t say "bacteriums", "datums" or "deliriums". Big up to The Walking Man.

Back to the question at hand though, like Jas says, you''re having a laugh if you think Norwich would even make a shortlist of World Cup venues. Euro ''96 used 8 cities: London, Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool, Leeds, Newcastle, Sheffield and Nottingham, with the smallest capacity being 30,000 for the City Ground.

Stoke, Blackburn, Bolton, Southampton, Derby, Coventry and Ipswich all have a larger stadium than us - and this is not even counting clubs from the same city. Even Leicester has more chance of hosting than us.

There aren''t even very many English people from outside East Anglia who can point to Norwich on a map. It''s very sad but very true. I think the only chance we''d ever have of staging an international tournament would be an U19s Championship; not even U21s or womens would get a look-in.

Portman Road would be more likely than Carrow Road
why wud it be. it may be slightly bigger however norwich has alot better attribues. plus its a city, ipswich is a town. and we have the dge on transport aswell. with an airport, bigger train station etc.

Stadiums for the 2018 world cup will be;

ANZ Stadium (formally Olympic Stadium)

Sydney Football Stadium

Melbourne Cricket Ground

Telstra Dome - Melbourne

Subiaco Oval

Suncorp Stadium (formally Lang Park)

Football Park - Adelaide

QEII Staduim - Brisbane

I''m pretty sure Australia is going to beat you to this one, just like Sydney beat Manchester to the Olympics in 2000.

Portman Road is much easier to get to I''d say, plus it has a bigger capacity, and has hosted International Friendlies before.

Im sure they would also prefer that than here as Portman Road is closer to London.
isnt WACA? on that list?
and tbh, im sure we have this one. jack warner is on our side. (now that keane has fecked off)
The WACA ground holds just over 20,000. It wouldn’t be fit for the World Cup, unless they expanded it, which if Australia win the 2018 World cut, there will probably be funding to expand a few stadiums.

Subiaco Oval is also in Perth, and holds over double what the WACA can.

Australia needs this world cup. Football is getting much bigger down here, but they need an excuse to fund more stadiums and training facilities.

I''d be quite surprised if a country with such a small population that is not a soccer power was awarded the World Cup.  What would be the purpose, from soccer''s point of view?

I suppose time will tell.

All I''ll say is that our government is putting a lot of money towards the bid, and I don''t think it was a coincidence the FIFA Congress was held in Sydney earlier this year. Also, I believe it does make sense to hold the world cup in an emerging Football market, which is conveniently located in a TV friendly timezone for the populated and rich TV markets of Asia.

Like everything, there are always positives and negatives.
How does the Olympic football work? If that is group based, then I''d say there''s more chance of Carrow Road being used for something like that. You could have a team based at Colney, another based at the University, and by using Portman Road too, linked with the ITFC training facility and another suitable base near Ipswich, you''d have the basis for a good little East Anglian Group with stadiums just the right size for matches such as Nigeria v Japan, and within easy reach of the Olympic Park at Stratford.
I think the World cup stadiums have already been decided...
NCFC offered up Carrow Rd as one of the football stadiums for 2010 Olympics and were turned down flat. Also if there is a question on stadium capacity, our board prefers the hotel to a bigger crowd.

FOOTBALL MUST COME FIRST

What part of a ground needs to hold at least 40k to stand a chance of holding a world cup game can''t some people grasp?. Norwich,Ipswich,Nottingham Forest are all to small and I can''t see it being cost effective to increase these when we have other perfectly good grounds allready in place, that just need a small makeover. But as stated by someone earlier colney could well be used,.the Germans nearly used it in euro 96.With 32 teams in a world cup rather than the 16 that was here for the euros I would say there is a good chance it will be used.

maybe us missing out on the tournement in 2008 is also factor to let us be hosts. yes 95% time we would probably qualifier but euros missed that spark this year and thats not just us saying it but rest of europe
Rubbish. It was one of the best tournaments there has been in years.

what facilities in particular are shit at villa park which are better at stadium of light and st.james''s then? all i want in a stadium is a seat, clean bathroom, programme seller, bar - which villa park all have. what areas in the ground are shit then? because ive been 4 times in past 15months and never once had shite experience

as for notrious area for stabbing and crime? i believe london is the hotbed for it all - so surely wembley, emirates should be taken off the list. and anfield with all the crime?
i agree with you about the want of a seat and the basics. i agreei always preferred trips to rotherham ahead of coventrybut that doesnt cut mustard with FIFA, they are very strict on it.

Having said that, we have hosted  England U21s in the past,so we''re not completely off the map.

And didn''t Lita score in one of those games Beauseant?

What the hell is going through people minds???

Norwich would never hold a World Cup game IF we won bid!! (Its stupid to even think it!!)

Firstly there needs to be at least 12 stadiums - similar to Germany 06.

Wembley

Emirates

Liverpool (new)

St James''s

City of Manchester

Old Traffold

Everton (New)

Derby

St Marys

Stadium of light

Riverside

Walkers

Not all are 40,000 that capacity needs to be - but I would bet any penny that any club in East Anglia do not got money to expand!!
I''d imagine if the FA were to go on a geographic basis then either Norwich or Ipswich stand a very good chance of being picked. And out of the 2 of us despite the current financial difference between the 2 clubs and while I admit to being Norwich biased I still think we''d have the best chance. Portman road from what i''ve seen has little chance of further expansion whereas Carrow Road (money permitting in the future) could be expanding to the required capacity. Improvements to local roads such as the A47 are also (finally) on the way and despite delays we do have a decent enough rail link to London and the North. And also while I am sure top priority goes stadium and local infrastructure, i''d imagine the quality of the city in question does also play a part because it''s where fans attending the matches will be spending most of there time. On that count Norwich has Ipswich easily licked, as well as many other rivals. I mean who really wants to go and see the Milton Keynes Concrete Cows when you can come to what is probably the best size city of it''s type in the UK? The only obvious downside at the minute is that I believe the host for 2018 gets chosen in 2010. With our current financial plight and the way the club is heading it maybe difficult to persuade the FA at the moment we would be a good choice to go for...
dont you think location would go angaist you being pretty isolated?
We''re 2 hours away from London by train and about an hour and a half or so away from the M1, one of the main arterial routes through the country. We''re hardly in the Outer Hebrides...
No motorway in the whole of east anglia linking to Norwich - might be a slight problem coming up the A140 (probably the worst road in England!!)

Be warned.

Having Jack Warner one''s side is rather like a three-edged sword.

He''ll find another Keane at the drop of a pin if necessary.
