Could the fans buy the club?

Recommended Posts

Like how Barcelona are run.. the fans own the club, vote on who the Board members are, and have a say in who the manager is.. they obviously dont choose the players or the signings but all money is The Fans money... theres no uncontrollable debt and the club has been at the pinnacle of European football for years....

Could our supporters buy Norwich city? If every fan gave say £100, once the club is aquired the supporters can vote the people they want onto the board (and this can be reviewed by yearly elections) and vote for the manager they want, based on the reccomendations on the board?

what do you all think?

Not really my business, but aren''t you running at a loss of around £3m a year just to maintain your current wage bill & expenditure? So even after somehow acquiring enough shares, a group of even 10 000 fans would still have to contribute £300 EVERY year on top of their STs just to keep a squad as good as the current one and not get into any more debt. I''m just not sure thats feasible. Its a good idea though - i know when Ipswich were in so much trouble a few years ago a group of fans looked into the possibility and found it simply wasn''t possible.

Now Jas with every best will in the world how do you think the likes of Wiz would handle the selection of people to the board? He would have them in and out like a picker in a brick outhouse during the plum picking season....arrdee.

It''s a very nice idea Jas, but i dont think it would work in the English league, the money divide is just to great between the championship and the premier league. Since the article below was written about Bracelona i believe the membership (instead of shareholders) stands at 150,000 we couldnt get anywhere near that in Norfolk even if we could and each memeber contributed £100 that would still only be £15million, not enough to buy out Delia let alone run the club.

I love the idea but it I cant see how it could work for us, still interesting post. The article below talks about it a bit more, warning though it may send some of you to sleep, would be interesting to know how the German clubs it talks about fund their teams. But i fear that the championship clubs probably have higher wages than alot of the German teams as apparently the championship  is Europes fifth richest league.

How much do you think it would cost to buy ipswichs ground of the council, then renevate it into flats before selling it on, we could use the money made to buy the club or a part of it.

The fundamental problem is that its one thing to buy the club, quite another to fund it going forward. For it to work, we would not only have to break even on running costs, but also generate sufficient profit to be competitive in the transfer market, as we would not be able to rely on directors dipping into their pockets.I suspect that there would be other logistical problems as well, for example wrangles over ticket prices, as evidenced by some of the comments on the Canary Petition thread.

When we debated this earlier in the summer I made the point about the peculiarity of Catalan culture. People in Barcelona see themselves as outside Spain, and football is a tangible means of declaring their independence. When Barca win Cups the victory parade goes along the Avenue Diagonal in the opposite direction to the way Franco''s troops marched in when Barcelona was "neutralised", as a deliberate gesture. In other words its not just about football (that''s really waht the club''s slogan "mes que un club" refers to),it is part of the community in a way that NCFC could never be.

Great idea in principle, but not in practice
