Can you get this website sorted out !

Its up and Down like a brides nightie.

It is without doubt the best Forum for Norwich fans (Without any of the infantile stuff that blights many of the other boards) which makes it even more frustrating when we cant get on !

I was trying for ages to get on over the weekend with little success.

Was something happening or do you need some new servers again ?

Fingers crossed it gets sorted soon.

Peter

I experienced problems too over the weekend, my usual bookmark to the Pink Un just locked up and displayed a white screen. Through history I was able to link to the message board without any problems - but could not access the main site.

Seems OK today so far!

I experienced some problems over the weekend too - found that www.pinkun.com wasn''t redirecting to the new site. Going to new.pinkun.com seemed to work fine for me though. Not sure this is the answer however!

I am having problems today and am only into the mb now as I have accessed through a NewsNow story published on the site. Like others, all I am getting is a white screen when I try to access the site in the normal way. Is anyone else having the same problems today?

In response to the above messages, the message board''s stalling is unfortunately unrelated to the forum engine, or anything else directly to do with the site itself.

There is a configuration problem with one of the webservers which has resulted in an incompatibility with our F5 Big-IP Loadbalancers. This is currently under investigation, and we hope to have it resolved shortly.

Until then, please keep hitting refresh....

Apologies Gazza!

Translation:
Due to the amount of people who are now using Pinkun.com and other Archant websites, we are currently using 4 individual web servers to support the sites rather than a single machine.

So that you can continue to use a single web address (i.e. www.pinkun.com) to access the sites running on these servers, a pair of specialised machines called "Load Balancers" are used to (you guessed it) balance the load, or users, evenly across the four machines. When you browse to http://www.pinkun.com, you do not connect to the same server every time but actually always connect to whichever of the four machines is doing the least work. Should a server fail for whatever reason, it is automatically taken offline without impacting the websites.

However, what seems to have happened in this instance is that one of the web servers isn''t communicating correctly with the load balancers. This communication problem is displayed to you as a user in the form of a pause while trying to deliver a page.

We are currently working to try and find out why this is the case, and to fix the problem.

Until then, please bear with us.

Many thanks

I''m relieved to hear that I''ve not been the only one having trouble accessing this site since the season has started. I have been getting the half loaded pages too - long threads are a nightmare as I only get the first few messages despite constantly refreshing the page.

Using Mozilla Firefox I''ve found opening a new tab (middle click) for viewing each individual thread helps a bit, so I don''t have to constantly load up the main thread list page.

I reckon I have posted twice as many messages during the close season because the site would actualy load properly. Shame it''s gone slow again since everyone is back from their hol''s.

Ooooh - cheese! Need a small fix right now.
Anyway, just to say that, whilst I am still being patient re: the problems with the site, I am still not able to access the site normally at all. The pretty blank screen prevails at every attempt, and I end up getting in the same way as I did yesterday. Am I alone in having these problems today?

Peter R, do you know if the domain name redirection and the like is working ok?

I''m seeing similar problems to "Susie b" in that attempts to access www.pinkun.co.uk seems to fall on "deaf ears" for indeterminate amounts of time. I would guess that is probably the same problem as access to the forums but thought I''d mention it just in case.

A question for the IS folks, I assume the load balancer is something more sophisticated than a simple round robin algorithm, but can it be set to a simple round robin algorithm?

Morph,
The domain redirection (pinkun.co.uk -> .com) seems to be ok from here. I''ll double check that the site''s setup correctly on all servers.

The load balancers are indeed more sophisticated than a simple round robin algorithm.
The performance of the individual web servers is continually monitored by the load balancers, and inbound user connections are distributed between the servers based on a number of observed factors - including things like current processor utilisation, existing connections, server responsiveness etc. While we could switch them to use a simple round-robin algorithm, it wouldn''t help solve this particular problem. If you’re interested, we’re currently running a high-availability pair of F5 Networks Big-IP load balancer units.

The teething problems we''ve been experiencing are not unfortunately anything to do with the algorithm, but how the web servers interact with the load balancer units. In summary (and with apologies to the non technical people) the user session persistence mechanism (making sure that once you''ve logged into the site on one server, you remain logged in regardless of which server your next request is handled by) didn''t co-exist too well with some other session persistence systems in use on our websites. This caused IIS to reject a number of user requests, which translated into delays and "broken" pages.

I''ve amended the load balancer configuration to change how sessions are persisted, and the sites now seem to be running somewhat more smoothly.

the usual page comes up, page cannot be displayed, sorry tim, this is going to lose you a lot of users, the site has always been slow, but not being able to access the home page is pretty frustrating when a signing could be imminent

i can still get on here and i have broadband and a fast machine, i feel sorry for those on dial up to be honest

trying to access the home page from favourites just brings up the blank white screen as many others have described

Don''t feel sorry for those on dial-up as that''s what I''m on at home on a PC that''s older than me and it loads up damn quick! OK, so www.pinkun.com doesn''t work but new.pinkun.com does.
