When we pulled out of the reserves league we were told it was because the standard of opposition wasn''t good enough and yet instead we are playing games against non-league teams from Lowestoft.

Was pulling out of the league the first step to doing a Newcastle and getting rid of our reserve team altogether, would certainly save some cash.

Based on the result last night... with a number of first team members playing a 2-1 win over Kirkley and Pakefield somewhat shows that maybe WE were not capable of playing to reserve league level...

surely even if it is a reserve team we should be beating kirkley and pakefield comfortably if we are "too good" to play other championship reserve teams...

And we are playing the unheard of Arsenal reserves soon

We pulled out of the reserve league becauswe Roeder was fed up of playing against youth teams every time. He said the like of K&P would represent ''men''s'' football...

Which is fair enough, why play in an uncompetitive league? We all talk about seeing our young players get toughened up, and what better than some kicks by the local teams.

Then every now and again a fixture against some better quality opposition.

An uncompetitive league? Ipswich won it at a canter and the reserves finished .... nowhere!

Attendances last year c.1500; last night 400!

Neither a good football or financial decision!

You''ve just proved my point there Rocky, if Ipswich won it at a canter, why bother playing against teams that will beat you week in week out.

and ironically you also defeat your own point that we should be playing against teams that are competitive - dont play Ipswich, but play Arsenal. Perhaps they''ll send down their U14s!!!!

No, I said we should be playing them every now and again, which makes sense. We can''t play our reserves against teams which are not at their "level" all the time, everyone would be bored of either trashings or easy victories, which ever way you look at it.

Therefore a mix of the two, rather than a league of one, make perfect sense to me.

I am sure that if you check the gate for teh Reserve game last season that was on or near the day the schools went back - it would be very low

I know my kids went to bed early last night and going to football never entered my head , when once they are back , we are pretty regular at reserve matches

There will be a decent crowd for the Arsenal game , I believe Kings Lynn are being approached - which again should bump up the crowd

Looks like a thrashing 4-0 from West Ham was part of the ''development plan''!

Firstly, behind closed doors games don''t follow the rules of normal football.

You can call a halt at any time, do a tactical huddle (ala American football), there are no limits to substitution or people coming on or off or coming off and rejoining 20 minutes later.

The ref may or may not be official (and probably local, if so) - the lino ''s often provided by each club (whichever hapless soul gets the short straw for this).

Cannot say about the West Ham result but these games are, generally, as close as football gets to surreal based on my own experience.

Camul,

I know this to be the case but in competitive football you DONT get the chance to change things around when you want, stopping and starting the game.

This is what pre-season if for and what the coaches are paid to do day in day out! Coach the players so that come matchday, the coach should be redundant. One of the problems in the english game is that the players allow the coaches to make most of the important decisions.

And more disturbingly, if the WHU game was ''coached'', surely you could prevent a 4-0 by plugging the gaps? Ho-Hum!!
