Hannibal 0 Posted April 27, 2004 after reading a whole host of coments made by just about everyone it seems to me as if there is no belife that norwich could actually sign a big name in the summer without braking the bank !now i have lived in norfolk all my life as much as i hate to admit it i would hate to move out of the area ! much should be said about the city and surrounding area it is a family area and this would appeal to superstars with a young family !i dont know if many people who read this have been to bolton or middlesbrough but these plces have to be the most dyer citys in the world they make yarmouth look attractive! so is the two clubs can attract the likes of jay jay, medieta, zenden, campo, djokief (forgive my spelling) then sure we can pull the prevervial rabbit out of the hat !keep the faith
DumbleDelia is Magic 0 Posted April 27, 2004 Good post Duke and I agree with some of your points. I live in Norwich, born and bred and it''s the finest city in the country. Beautiful surounding countryside and the most gorgeous coast line in the country. However, if this is what we could atract top players with we''d have Henry and Pires in tomorrow! Unfortunately, I think money will be the overriding factor. Yes when players come they see what a lovely part of the world it is. However money talks and teams like Boro aren''t short of it! I''d absolutely love it if we turned round and brought in Reid, Dawson, Pennant. However, I just can''t see it.
ZLF 334 Posted April 27, 2004 I think Worthy will surprise us in the summer. £30k pw (isnt that what Hux wages go up to in the summer?) is ''only'' £1.5m per year. This summer, like last year, only the very best players will attract a transfer fee and those on wages over £30k pw will be regular internationals for big sides or at the very best clubs. We can never compete for those sorts of playersMost of the deals will be bosmans or season long loans. As we will not pay a transfer fee for most of the player who come here suddenly we CAN afford to compete on wages for 1 or 2 key personnel in key positions. Our club is very similar in size to Bolton - if they can survive with that approach and not much in the way of a sugar daddy so can we - and they have some superb players in their squad... It would help when we seal the title though.I just pray we dont go down the Leicester route and sign three teams in the hope of getting one signing right! I am sure we will get a surprise with the signings - big enough to match the Hux/Crouch announcements - so roll on the summer.OTBC
Tumbleweed 106 Posted April 28, 2004 The problem with offering the high wages is that you then have the current crop of players wanting the same. I can''t see any genuine "names" coming at least in the first season. Remember we have still been operating at a loss and have an £8m debt. So until we have done a Charlton or Bolton and got at least one season under our belt I do think we need to be cautious. A little well placed money like a Hux only in defence or right midfield would be good but not a "star" just for the sake of it.Middlesbrough are linked with everybody under the sun because they have a sugar daddy called Steve Gibson who bankrolls them. The money will run out sooner or later. It alwyas does. And apart from beating Bolton in the Carling Cup which has nowhere near the credibility it used to have, they are still rubbish.
