Thompson set for Norwich?

Recommended Posts
Well as everyone gets excited about an unknown £150k Irish striker, it seems that Coventry are about to add Clinton Morrison to their recent signing of Eastwood. I''m not saying Thompson isn''t worth a punt, but it worries me that everyone is so easily pleased by the possible signing of a player who will undoubtedly be a gamble a this level.
IMHO he''s no more of a gamble than Eastwood at his price! Eastwood is NOT proven at THIS level yet!!

As long as we sign someone! This is starting to get ridiculous, we need to sort out defense and attack and another day with nothing, what the hell are we waiting for!

The problem you have is that Mr Roeder is not a Manager who gives a running commentary on who he is chasing.  Never has and never will.  I am sure things are going on in the background but he isn''t going to tell you that or who is involved ,except in the most general terms.

Sky Sports News seem pretty sure he is going to Stockport!!

I think at 100,000 its worth a gamble and hopefully will hijack the deal

If we are seriously in for him and he ends up going to Stockport then we may as well give up!
Late Norwich bid to snatch Thompson Stockport County and Norwich City were locked in a tug-of-war over Linfield striker Peter Thompson last night. The Canaries made contact with the Blues yesterday before tabling an improved bid for the 24-year-old. It is expected that Football League One side Stockport will renew their efforts to sign the Northern Ireland international by increasing their iADVERTISEMENT nitial £100,000 offer, but Norwich appear to be in pole position as the race for Thompson gathers pace. Linfield’s board has insisted no deal – if any – will be completed until after tonight’s massive Champions League clash with Dinamo Zagreb. Thompson (right) is expected to play against the Croatians, contrary to reports that he would sit out the first qualifying round, first leg fixture at Windsor Park. It has been a rollercoaster fortnight for the predatory striker. Scottish Premier League club Kilmarnock were first to make their move – twice having package deals in the region of £150,000 turned down. Then came the approach by Stockport on Monday with an offer of £100,000 plus bonuses for the prized frontman. But now Championship outfit Norwich are poised to pounce, and a deal could be rubber stamped in the next 24 hours. Glenn Roeder was reportedly on his way to Belfast to watch Thompson in action, but it is believed the Canaries boss will travel with his squad for a pre-season friendly in Gorleson instead. Thompson appeared to be on his way to Stockport yesterday after Blues boss Jeffrey admitted talks were at an advanced stage. But Linfield’s board last night insisted no deal would be completed before tonight’s game. In a statement, the club said: “No transfer deal has been completed for Peter Thompson and any possible move will not be considered until the Linfield management meets to discuss the matter after Wednesday’s game with Zagreb. “Peter Thompson is a signed and registered Linfield player who is available to play in Wednesday’s European game. “It has been made clear that any decision on the player’s transfer will be taken with full approval of the board.”
Sky sports have been running the story about him leaving Linfield all day but say Stockport have increased their offer to £165,000 and thats where he is going, no mention of us.

Looking forward to seeing him play tonight. He can''t be so bad if he''s knocked in that many goals, even if it is in Ireland.

And George Best didn''t even have a club as Glentoran said he was to small. The point is it should not matter the league, the past history etc, there will always be one player who can make the step up, not saying he will. In fact who has even said that we have made a bid?

Lets not get to optimistic, I hear that SPL clubs are scouting him as well and this could well end up like another Paddy McCourt

Wouldn''t worry about Sky Sports News. They might blow their own trumpet a lot, but they are often inaccurate and late at getting stories (the minor ones at least) on the air. They caused the ''new striker within 24 hours'' fiasco recently; and I also remember not long ago reading an article about Alex Baptiste''s move to Blackpool... only for SSN to announce it as news ''just in'' over a couple of hours later.

Assuming we do sign him, the questions being asked are:A) Is he good enough at this level?B) Is this the only striker we are signing due to lack of funds? For the initial question, we simply won''t know until he does arrive and gets some games under his belt.As for the second, well that''s even more up in the air. Personally I think it''s an incredulous suggestion that this would be the only reinforcement we''d see in this position. It would appear that Roeder''s patience with Martin is getting wafer thin (understandable really), and we can''t afford to go into a season with 1 main striker with 2 younger players as backup. Thompson is a good age and despite playing in a lower quality league, has apparently shown a lot of the qualities and attributes you''d look for in a striker. For the apparent price on offer, this isn''t a major gamble, and could potentially pay off massively. We do however need to get another more proven goalscorer in IMHO, which then would give us plenty of options from a striking perspective. What I do find frustrating however is the negativity being shown about this possible signing. When teams like Wolves and Reading were signing cheap players like Doyle and Kightly who then performed, questions were being asked on here about our scouting network, and why we weren''t getting these sort of players. Along comes someone like Thompson and instead of getting praise for looking for quality players further afield who don''t break the bank, instead we get criticism about lack of ambition and signing ''no-mark'' players from a crap league. There really is no pleasing some people. I appreciate that signings like this aren''t going to make most fans jump for joy, and that''s fair enough, but at least give the guy a chance before slating him and the club...

Looks like we won''t find out until tomorrow.

"A move may be imminent - Norwich City have made contact for the first time and Stockport have put their offer in writing," Jeffrey told the Belfast Telegraph.

"They are both very good offers, they are now with the chairman and will be discussed by the board before any decision is made."

Linfield could make a decision on Thompson''s future after Wednesday''s UEFA Champions League qualifier against Dinamo Zagreb, live on Sky Sports 1.
