What about the signing of Gary Doherty in 2005? For almost a million pounds?

Christ.

Does Michael Bailey post on here? I would be interested  to know whether or not he is actually a Norwich fan?

If I was going to be even pickier, we also signed Ian Murray who was primarily a centre back, especially when playing for Hibs as their captain before joining Rangers.

Even though Doherty is still here, perhaps the reporters at Archant are trying to erase the transaction from their memory.  I''m still trying too...............

He was lethal upfront for us, with that goal from a yard out at Newcastle. Which is far better than being fatal for us at the back...

Murray wasnt even really a footballer was he? he was just a man in the Replica kit who ran around.... we cant class him as a "defender" lol

I dont believe that, wheres the Worthington quote?  There is no way that we signed him as a striker, we would then have only had Shackell and Fleming for the whole premiership season. He was bought to replace Malky.

Word has it Michael is a long-serving City fan. He would also strongly argue Ian Murray was signed on the basis of playing in about eight different positions - although he wouldn''t want to commit on how well he could play in them. Not sure that would make him a specialist?

Discuss.

True he was brought in as a striker, all because they wouldnt stump up for a certain Peter Crouch.

Doherty was signed as a centre back, he was put up front late against Man Utd on his debut so we could a bit more direct in an attempt to get back into the game, he did well so went up top against newcastle and scored so stayed there for a little while

If you read it properly it says ''club''s first permanent centre-back signing in 8 years''.

Ian Murray is a centre back who can play left back and in midfield if required. This does not make him a ''specialist'' centre back.

Gary Doherty is a centre back who has also been known to play up front occassionally for his country and the odd substitute appearance for Spurs, but this does not make him a ''specialist'' centre back.

Dejan Stefanovic is a centre back who can also play left back, in fact playing left back for the whole 2006/2007 season as a left back for Portsmouth, but it is ok to call Stefanovic a specialist centre back? so hes not a defender that can play in two positions?

What about Craig Fleming? he played a fair bit at right back one season, so hes no longer a specialist centre back?

Chris Sutton wasnt a specialist forward then? after coming through the ranks as a centre back? he had to be called a centre back still even after scoring over 20 goals up front? no i didnt think so.

Heres some reports at the time:

"Versatile Tottenham defender Gary Doherty looks poised to ink a deal with Premiership new boys Norwich City."

FROM: http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11675_2308573,00.html

"Norwich have sealed the capture of Gary Doherty from Tottenham in time for the defender to join the squad for the trip to Manchester United."

FROM: http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11675_2308468,00.html

"Sheffield United boss Neil Warnock is seemingly interested in landing defender Gary Doherty from Norwich City."

http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11683_2317295,00.html

I think it was well known at the time that Doherty was a defender, and that he was replacing Malky.

Actually I think you will find that it said ten years, and referred to Malky Mackay, before the amended it to state 8 years when realising that they had signed Steve Walsh in 2000....... but 8 years is still 4 years before Doherty...... so my proposal is that they acknowledge that Gary Doherty was a centre back before coming to Norwich and amend it to state 4 years.

In fact even the club state on his profile that he is a defender.

"At Tottenham, Doherty eventually settled into a defensive role, and although he enjoyed probably his best spell after the turn of the year in 2003/04"

"At Norwich, his career started well, earning a regular place at the heart of the defence, but he lost his place in February to Jason Shackell and Norwich were eventually relegated"

"The experience he''s had at Premiership level and international level makes him a great addition to the squad," said assistant manager Doug Livermore.

"Obviously his favourite position is as a central defender and the gaffer will want to be playing him there. But there will be occasions if need be that he can go up front."

I don''t know why you''re arguing over this.

He was signed as a utility man, and his first few appearances for us were as a striker.

If not, explain this, from September 2004:

Liverpool: Dudek, Finnan, Hyypia, Carragher, Riise, Alonso (Diao 65), Hamann, Warnock (Biscan 77), Luis Garcia, Baros, Cisse (Traore 71).
Subs Not Used: Josemi, Kirkland.

Booked: Hamann.

Goals: Baros 23, Luis Garcia 26, Cisse 64.

Norwich: Green, Drury, Fleming, Charlton, Edworthy, McVeigh (Jonson 75), Safri (Bentley 45), Francis, Holt, Huckerby, Doherty (McKenzie 45).
Subs Not Used: Ward, Helveg.

He was so inept [scored once, a tap-in at Newcastle], that we put him at the back when Worthy belatedly realised that playing two midgets [Charlton and Flem] at centre back in the Premiership was an ill-advised tactic.

Didn''t Murray play at left-back when Drury was out?

[/quote]Best not to remind us of that, however.

That would be the same Peter Crouch who is now worth £11 million and has several England caps and goals to his name and who would have been an ideal target man in a season when we didn''t get one until January. Either Ashton or Crouch should have been signed at start I always think this would have made a real difference.
