Balance in the team

Recommended Posts

We can begin to see how GR is planning. Hoolahan will provide excellent service from the left, able to beat players not by pace but by skill.Clingon seems to be in the Safri mold - playing in front of the back four, and beginning passing movements, as well as providing something of an engine in the midfield. If Gow comes, then he will be in competition with Rusty, presumably, or with Chadders, box to box, or playing behind the strikers. It is difficult to see what role there will be for Eagle, and for the moment for Lathrope or Spillane, in the midfield. Croft may not get a start if three of the four midfield places go to Fozzy, Clingers and Gow. Could Rusty play wide right also? So GR has permutations open to him which he has alcked hitherto. Does he persevere with the policy of one winger to start, of it he can tighten up the defence play two wingers? All this means that he must now sort out central defence and the strikers. I assume that Spillane could fill in at right back, but we have no cover at left back, in the event of injury. Early on there was talk of a youngster on loan, Jack somebody, who could play CD or RB. Is he expected to be a first choice at CD? Even if  he is, or some other loanee, we are still desperately short there - Doc has still not re-appeared, although he will soon be un waged....The 2/3 new midfielders look as if the midfield will be more productive, but we are still woefully short at the back and up front, even if Martin and Spillane get their act together.

Yeah i  agree with that, we need a defender with a bit of championship experience.

I''d like to think that we could also spend a little bit on a striker, must be a fair bit in their to get someone.

Gow''s official position is Attacking-Mid isn''t it? I''ve never known him however to play here, often players just off the front man as far as i know, more of a Stiker supporting a Center Foward than an attacking midfielder

Lets not forget that we still have Pattison. So this means good competition for those midfield places. Personally I would do this-

Hoolahan Clingan Russell Chadwick

I think Fozzy is a good player but doesn''t posses the engine that Rusty has. As for Clingan well apparently he is a free-kick specialist. Just what we need. Who remembers tha free kick we did at home to Colchester. Hucks and Fozzy line it up pass it to.....no-one. Im really excited about what roeders doing.

OTBC!

At the moment I would go for a european style midfield formation;

               Clingan       Fozzie

Chadwick          Gow            Hoolahan

with a strong, mobile centre forward up front who can also get some goals i.e. Rigters

            BACK FOUR

                 Clingan

Croft      Fozzy/Rusty     Hoolahan

                  Gow

             1 STRIKER

this would be my ideal midfield, i would play either Fozzy or Rusty depending on the oppisition.

i would also only play 1 striker (target man) and have Gow (when he signs [:P]) play off him.

any thoughts?

Bass, good suggestion there... although i think by playing two holding midfielders would provide a bit more cover and with Fozzie playing there he would be able to play the ball about a bit.. out to the wide men or to Gow playing the number ''10'' role...

In all honesty,

                              Marshall

Otsemobor   Albrechtsen   Gorkks   Betrand

               Clingan/Russell   Fozzie

Chadwick/Croft              Gow               Hoolihan

                              Rigters

Subs: Arnold, Shackell, Clingan/Russell, Pattison, Cureton

would make me pretty happy

Spillane is more likely to be considered as a CB now as I can''t see a place for him in mid-field. Sub GK would have to be Rudd as Arnold now plays for Grays Athletic.

yes i think that could work nicely!!! i like your idea of Albrechtsen and Gorkss at the back, them two and Clingan and Fozzy playing just infront nothing should get past them!!! and Gow can and push up to partner Rigters or Sibieski. [:P]

[/quote]I think from looking at who Roeder has (and wants) to bring in, he clearly is looking to fix the biggest problem area I think we have had for many a year.  Yes we have had poor defensive shows and yes we have been light on goals up front in recent seasons but as far back as I can remember our midfield has been a huge problem for us.Far too often in the last 5 or 6 seasons (even when we won the league) our midfield has always been a deep sitting one without the ball, which always invites other teams onto you. A strong midfield will make an average defence much more secure.  More importantly though the signings so far (and his liking for Fozzy) signal Roeder''s intent to keep the ball much better in midfield than we have in recent season''s.  Too many times we have given the ball away very cheaply and this has always been my biggest conern and why for witnessed long ball being played to Earnie.  Again keeping the ball better in that area will take more pressure of the defence and you would hope, allow us to create more goalscoring chances because again this has been something lacking for a while too.I still think there is a lack of goals in the midfield, even with new signings though.  Clingan got 1 in 85 games for Forest despite being a "free-kick specialist", Hoolahan averages 1 in 7, which I suppose is not too bad but Croft can''t buy a goal and Fozzy, Chadwick and Russell are far from prolific.  Someone to score from midfield like Francis did would add a whole new dimension to the team. It''s shaping up well.... so far.
