My first job was as a milkman in North

Norfolk, moving on to become a chef''s gopher. Thirty years later, I am

a novelist and screenwriter.

That''s awesome, I''m so jealous! I want to be a novelist, any tips?

I''m an NHS librarian. It''s not quite as dull as it sounds. We''re not all bespectacled old ladies with hair in bun and tweed jackets telling people to ''shhhhhhhhhhhhh'' y''know. [;)]

Oh, and I very rarely spend time stamping books or tidying up books on shelves ''n all.

Commercial and litigation solicitor also working as company secretary and business and governance consultant.   Much more interesting than it sounds.   Many posts are about the workings and dynamics of the Club as a company, board and other issues so you can see how complex and practical these things are in the real business world.

Don''t believe everything on here ? At the risk of being shot down in flames - and my humble apologies to '' yellow hammer '' if I am wrong - but this is a pretty meteoric rise, no? From freezing his wotsits off as a milkie around the bracing Norfolk coast to romantically lolling around on an idyllic island in the Far East, ala Ian Fleming/Noel Coward, is pretty spectacular.

Perhaps the clue is in the location. '' Far East ''.........Lowestoft perhaps?

PS.......I''ve got me tin hat and flak jacket at the ready just in case.

[/quote]Yeah, cheers... *rolls eyes* [:P]I''ve actually got quite a huge idea on the go but I''m probably years away from even starting due to the amount of research and general development it needs.... gives me a bit of time to find out how to get published, etc, I suppose... [:D]Any other budding writers out there? A few of us tried to get a bit of a writing collective off the ground a few years ago, but it stalled due to kids/work/uni... wouldn''t mind getting it back up and running again, myself, I managed to finish my first short story in two years the other week, woop!

It annoys me that when you go down to Waterstones (other bookshops are available) 90% of the football books thay have are either the inane witterings of twenty five year old millionaires or the inane witterings of a fat, balding football hooligan. There''s a distinct lack of intelligent football books that tell you something you don''t already know. So I''d like to write something a little different. I''ve had a couple of ideas in the past but I very much doubt that I''ll ever have the time, money or resources [:(]Your huge idea''s nothing to do with climate change is it? I still have fond recollections of that thread about Earnie''s Hummer where you and Cluck slugged it out for what seemed like weeks [;)]

I seem to remember writing something at the time like "I wish there was some way of showing to the public one of the possible outcomes of climate change, like in a book..." and from little acorns......... its not just about that, its a much bigger idea, but it actually stemmed from that conversation, merged with another idea I''d had and has been growing ever since! [:|]By God I loved that thread, though... Cluck was a pretty good adversary in that respect, whether he was intentionally playing devil''s advocate or not the debate we ended up having seemed to capture the imagination for a brief period and hopefully let people see both sides of the argument (something I deem important as a budding man of science as well as fiction)... in fact, wasn''t that during the close-season as well? God we get bored, don''t we.... [:D]

Oh, forgot to mention Shack, if you''re looking for a good football related book, take a gander at The Miracle of Castel di Sangro by Joe McGinniss.  Its by an American journalist who became obsessed with Italian football after watching the Italians in the USA 94 World Cup and spent an entire season in the small town of Castel di Sangro after they''d gained shock promotion to Serie B - the equivalent of a team the size of, for example, York getting into the Championship.  He spends the year following their fortunes, all the ups and downs, making friends with the players and their families and, for a time, becoming part of the miracle.  It''s an absolutely absorbing read and I heartily recommend it! I feel the same about football books, but this one is on another level.
