Goodbye Lappin?

Recommended Posts

If Motherwell do have the option to make Lappin''s move a permanent one I think they will do so. Shame in my opinion; a decent player and I would love him to stay with us. Have we sufficient cover on the left now that Pattison has found his touch? The unofficial ''well site''s message board has been complimentary and I think Saturday against Hibs was his first start after a few appearances as sub (Motherwell have had a few games cancelled because of a waterlogged pitch) but he did well apparently, even though he was at left back rather than his preferred midfield role. The offical match report says he got some good crosses and corners in:

http://www.motherwellfc.co.uk/page/MatchReport/0,,10292,00.html

There''s also an interview with him. Ian Murray is also mentioned....

I agree: a decent player, and good to have in the squad. We''ve got Bertrand and Pattison, but Pattison''s not a natural wide player and Bertrand is LB at the moment, so I think we could do with keeping him. Murray, on the other hand....

a shame... he had some good games for us and scored some Crackers (luton away? Cardiff at home? anyone)

not a 1st team regular but certainly not a bad player by any stretch. would of been handy to have kept him around in the squad as he can do a job at this level and has a mean Set piece on him.. something we dont score enough from.

I for one wish him well and if his path ever crosses with the club again would give him a good reception.

jas :)

Getting rid of him would be more short sighted than getting rid of Brown. Players with decent left feet are thin on the ground at the best of time and we only have 1 without him. With our other left side playing midfielders both being right footed, Lappin gives us a very worthwhile option on the left that we just don''t have at the moment.

A Decent player who cannot tackle, header, dribble and is probably the slowest player we have (that includes Docs and Dublin). He has got a good left foot, good first touch (but so do alot of ameatures) and is handy at set pieces, but has far too many weakness'' to hang on to. He''s found his level in Scotland, substitute in a side outside the top 2!!

Not only scored some crackers but hoofed the ball off the line at the last derby if I remember rightly. And was Man of the Match, for what it''s worth.

Simon Lappin and I have a great respect for each other.

Me. Because I think he''s very underated and deserved a longer run at LM under Roeder.

Him. Because he copied my name !    [:D]

Pros: Good with a dead ball.

Cons: Can''t tackle, has no pace and is lightweight and easily forced off the ball.

So unless we want a dead ball specialist (and heaven knows we could use one), we should sell him off to Motherwell.

I just so happened to be at Fir Park for the Hibs game, as it were

Lappin is not slow, lets get that straight. As for cant tackle, he took down some 6 foot 5 giant playing up front for Hibs and won the ball too.

His crosses were pretty decent, took all the corners and set pieces around the box to good effect

Clearly still doesnt enjoy left back, although much has to be said for him if hes willing to keep trying at it.

While on the subject of Motherwell, take a peek at David Clarkson if you can. Played a good game, scored the only goal and has a knack for getting past players when it matters. Strong in the air, clever player.

Keep in my opinion. We need decent squad players, and he fits the bill. Id like to think by opening day next season our bench will read along the lines of "Gilks, Camara, Fozzy, Croft, AN other" rather than the start of this season, which was along the lines of "Gilks, Murray, Strihavka, Brellier, Jarvis"

Just examples mind you, but you can always tell the strength of a club by its bench. We need solid players, and Lappin is such a player IMO

When he came from St Mirren he impressed me from the outset - much more so than Fotheringham. Good first touch I thought. Do you have contacts up there Bucketman? Would be interesting to get the fans'' view. My concern is that we could or probably will, lose a lot of our loan players and anyway, I''m not convinced that playing too many is a good thing. If we can sign in quality like Martin Taylor or better then OK, but otherwise decent and very willing players like Lappin should not be given up easy. I hope someone is at least keeping watch and have not just written him off. As a left abck we can probably afford to let him go but as a left sided midfielder we may just be missing the real Lappin.

i remember the ''best crosser in scotland'' well.  its seems from the reports he''s carrying on where he left off.  when here, neat, tidy player with good attitude, but regretfully his crosses set up few and far between chances, let alone goals.  at left back, he was too weak to dominate wingers, who could ''do'' him at will.  afraid, the boys found his niche.  in his replacements, we have plastic - who is looking better and better at left back the more he plays, and can hold his own.  my initial concens over him were positional related.  however, likewise in common with lappin - when playing left mid - plastic doesn''t really create anything in truth.  maybe with experience this could improve.  but as a left defensive midfielder, he can certainly keep a game tight.  hucks obviously offers more going forward in terms of creatvity and goal scoring ability.  thanks lappin, but keep where you are laddie!!!

Yeh, I know people up there

The general feeling is that hes a pretty decent player that they would be looking to keep. Didnt hear a bad word said about him while I was there

And for the record, Murray was still abysmal. That somehow was a lot more pleasing than Lappins success [:D]

Some people remember those goals vs luton and cardiff

I remember his abysmal performances first-hand at wolves and plymouth.

he''s just not good enough at Championship level at left-back, left-wing or centre-midfield. how many positions do we want to try him?

good luck to him at Motherwell but they can keep him.

I live in Glasgow and a few of my mates are Motherwell fans and have been very pleased with him since they signed.

He got MOTM today against Celtic http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/scot_prem/7328014.stm

Can''t be too bad than can he?

It''s Scottish football for god''s sake !!!!, this is the same division that Ryan Jarvis was playing in from August-December, - he''s now playing for a team 4th from bottom in league 2.  (Isn''t Paul Dalglish also carving out a living up there aswell?)

Celtic are not exactly Sunday league and no-one could compare Lappin with Dalgleish (how many goals did he score?). Not suggesting he''s the best thing ever to don the yellow and green or even that he would make the current team. But if his contract is up this summer he could presumably be signed for free.  My point is that we will be without many of the loan players next year (and both Saturday''s goal scorers) and Lappin would be a good squad man to have on the bench. Bertrand is a much better LB  (- let''s hope we can renew his loan). Interesting that Lappin started the Celtic match from his preferred midfield position. If this link to the motherwell.org site''s message board works you can see his goal. Not one of his set pieces but as they say, not a tap in either.

Well although the Scottish league isnt that good, Celtic reached the last 16 of the champions league. Aberdeen (Who finished third - the same spot Motherwell occupy) reached the last 16 (Or 32 maybe) of the UEFA cup. So it isnt a terrible standard towards the top of their premier league.

But anyway, twas only one goal.

Quite so. But he couldn''t do worse than Cureton''s freekick on Saturday - and  I make that two more goals than Croft has scored this season and from fewer starts ...Different players of course. Don''t mind if the manager is able to make good signings in the summer. Otherwise I just hope someone is keeping an eye on Lappin''s performances. Don''t want to throw away the baby with the bathwater or whatever the saying is.

As ive stated elsewhere id happily have him back. I wouldnt want him as first choice, but would be good cover for the left side of the pitch (Assuming he is happy to sit on the bench)

Would also be useful as a player to bring on when we are chasing a game (Can put a decent ball in, good free-kicks etc)

I agree Trent and would happily have him back too, think he''s a good squad player and don''t really understand why we let him go in the first place.

I had mistakenly thought his contract was up this summer but according to the article in today''s EDP he has another year. So maybe his future is more in his own hands though the lack of any meaningful reserve football these days won''t help. Of course the manager may refuse to even consider selcting him and given his lambasting of other clubs'' players who refuse to go out on loan (ie to Norwich) or to accept a transfer and prefer to just collect the wages.... But I think he genuinely wants to play for us and I would certainly like to see him given another chance.

[/quote]I also agree.  He is a decent squad player (nothing more) and it''s not as if we don''t need any.  He had some poor games for us but so have just about every other player in the squad.  Surely he would have better than Gibbs and Henry down the left at times?
