Gerry Howshall.

Recommended Posts

Now you lovely old posters , how many of you remember Gerry Howshall , ?  A player we sighed from w.b.a. I will always remember us unveiling him at the Norwood Rooms at our annual dinner , He was the flame headed tough tackling  wing half . I could not believe that Lol Morgan had signed him for us . I had watched his career and most pundits had him better than Billy Brenmer of leeds because of his distribution  qualities never mind his tackling and winning the ball . I will admit that I styled my game on him , as I was playing at the time ,I hasten to add in junior football .

Gerry was unlucky with us he was either injured or  unwell . I remember watching him in the reserves on frosty icy days and every one could see how good he was . The thing I will always remember was they always played the Anita Harris song , [8]I will spend my life just loving you[8] and that''s how I felt . When he was fit enough and in the team I can remember us taking a team apart . I cant remember what team it was but we scored 4 and I think Gerry set up 3 of the goals , perhaps Ricardo remembers this match , I also remember the Sunday paper the People giving Gerry 10 marks for his performance , then of course Gerry would be out for a few weeks with injury''s again .

He was an enigma I will admit but what a player if fortune had been on our side and his . arrdee.

I remember Gerry Howshall Arrdee. I remember him being signed at the Supporters Club dinner. I think I remember something about the transfer being financed by funds raised by the Supporters Club. We didn''t used to score four very often in those days. We are talking Lol Morgan days when our top scorer was Kenny Foggo with a dozen goals. But I do remember us scoring four at Portsmouth on Grand National Day in 1970. I remember watching the Grand National which was won by a horse called Gay Trip and then probably the wrestling with Kent Walton and finally the football results and being full of excitement as I saw and heard the announcer say Portsmouth 1 Norwich City 4. I got the dreaded shhhhhhhh from my Grandad because my Nan was checking their football pools coupon.

This all sticks in my mind because there wasn''t the same coverage for away games in those days. No watching it on the wireless for us stay at home fans. So we had to wait for the Pink Un later in the evening or the next day to find out the details. When I finally saw the Pink Un the headline read "Bennett makes it Gay Trip for The Canaries" and I was able to read of how we had won 4-1 with an Albert Bennett hat-trick. I think Terry Anderson scored the other goal.

I wonder if this was the game Arrdee? Like I say we didn''t score many at that time so 4 goals were few and far between. I don''t remember many others but this one always sticks in my mind because of the Pink Un headline.

(In case no-one else replies): Well yes, and no arrdee. As you say, he wasn''t exactly an ever present was he? My memory''s dim but I remember him for his tackling more than his distribution or his running. I fancy he collected a few bookings. He was playing alongside and over-shadowed by attacking stars like Ken Foggo (also signed from wba). If the stats are true he played just 40 games and never scored. Maybe I''ll ask you in another 37 years time if you remember Simon Lappin (who may yet score more goals than Croft for us this season). Funny how we have favourites amidst the also-rans isn''t it? Talking of favourites, we signed Colin Suggett from wba as well - the likes of Jamie Cureton could do worse than study some of his goals...lovely little player ("Though I know I''m only dreaming, I can''t stop myself from....).

Signed as nutty says, at a supporters club dinner (for £25,000) 1967, made 43 apps and then left on a free (1971. Last reported sighting.....

Head greenkeeper at  thornbury (South Gloucs) golf club (recent)

Now arrdee. Can anyone remember Georgie Waites ?

Figures in my all time worst eleven players to have worn the yellow and green. He was awful and just about summed up Lol Morgan who is one of the worst managers City have ever had along with ''Horror'' Hamilton and ''Good God'' Grant. Jimmy ''offside'' Blair was another of the all time worst eleven and I think Ron Saunders bought him as a two-fingered salute to Arthur South on his way out of the door.

I tell you what I remember lappinitup, after being promoted from the Third Division the previous season, I remember vividly coming into Christmas in the 60/61 season and we were pushing to get to the top of the second division, there were two or three teams a couple of points above us, one of them being Ipswich. We had back to back games against Ipswich over Christmas which I was sure we were going to win. We lost both of them heavily, and my heart sank. I think that''s when Ipswich had Crawford and Phillips firing on all cylinders. When we signed Georgie Waites in the new year I wondered why we were signing someone from a team who was close to the bottom of the division. I don''t have many vivid memories of Waites but I do remember he was clever on the ball. Is that what you recall?

Don''t think George Waites ever had much of a chance as he was signed as part of the exchange deal (with cash adjustment) which took fan''s favourite and Cup hero Errol Crossan to Orient.Waites had always been a traditional winger but I seem to remember we tried to convert him into an inside forward. He was a short, slight figure (with a shock of black hair) and despite some obvious ability on the ball was easily bustled out of a game.Would appreciate anyone being able to flesh out my remembrances...

We lost those christmas games 4-1 and 3-0 yankee and I was devastated. I remember playing Orient shortly after and their right winger (Waites) took us apart so I was delighted when we signed him a few days later. That  however was the only good game he ever had at Carrow road. Bernard is correct with his description of him.

A pic of Georgie (along with Gordan Bolland) while they were at Orient can be found here....

He came with quite a reputation after signing for about £30 grand if I remember. Rumour had it that he wasn''t too well-blessed between the ears after getting on the wrong team bus after an away match! . Not sure if that story is just apochryphal or true but it made me smile at the time . Shame he was so injury-prone.

As for George Waites -wasn''t he one of the original Brylcreem Boys :)

I can remember him well. He arrived with a lot of expectation and didnt really deliver, a bit like Drazen Muzinic although he played more games I think. I always thought he was a bit of a lardy myself. Not really one for the ''Best Ever'' dinner.

Hi Ray, yes I remember Gerry quite well. He was one of Lol Morgans signings in the 1967/68 season. His main claim to fame being that he actually signed for the club during the annual dinner (£25,000 fee I believe). He came with a decent reputation but never really showed it in my opinion probably because he was dogged by injuries.

I can''t remember this match you are talking about but it must have been sometime in the 68/69 season as Gerry played 26 of his 37 total appearances that year. They were the days when we called anyone wearing the number 4 or number 6 shirt, a half back. Personally I much preferred Terry Anderson (who was playing at the same time) in this position.

My greatest memory of Gerry unfortunately is his disappearance. He was picked to play in an away match and for some reason that was never explained he went walkabout. Ron Saunders was manager then and rather unsurprisingly we never saw Gerry in a Norwich shirt again. Ron was not the kind of guy who had any sympathy for a weakness so Gerry''s demissed was not altogether unexpected.

Whilst looking my records for the Howshall info I happened to notice that he was a contemporary of another one of Lol Morgans big signings Big John Manning. Do you remember him Ray? We used to sing to the tune of "The Mighty Quinn"."Come on without, come on within, you''ve not seen nothin like the John Mann-ing " .

Ha Ha Ha, happy days.

Oh Dear Yankee. Georgie Waites, I remember him well. A short@rse inside forward we got from Leyton Orient.

We bought him during the 1960/61 season if memory serves. It was our first season in division 2 after the Cup run of 58/59. You are correct that we bought him just after Xmas and I think it was on the strength of a superb game he had at Carrow road the previous month while playing for Leyton Orient. I remember it well, we won 3-2 but George was superb in midfield.

If ever a player was wrongly appraised on the strength of one game it was George.Unfortunately I don''t think he ever played to that standard while in City colours. He was only here for a couple of seasons before moving on. I seem to recollect that we bought Tommy Bryceland to replace him.

Tommy Bryceland.............................Now there was a legend

I remember John Manning Ricardo. He was a decent partner for Hugh Curran but left soon after Curran was sold to Wolves. I remember singing ''The Mighty John Manning'' and remember ''Hughie Hughie La La La''.

My best memory of Manning was scoring our goal that knocked Sunderland out of the FA Cup. We had drawn 1-1 at Carrow Road and nobody gave us a chance up at Roker Park in the replay but we won 1-0 thanks to the mighty John Manning and I won a tanner off my Nan.

After Manning can you remember another lump called Bryan Conlon who we got from Millwall??

I do - but he didn''t do much did he? (Someone wake me up when we get to 1971 and David Cross -.."from Rochdale, for a club record fee..."!! As Ron Saunders said, "He''ll be all right when we fatten him up a bit.." And he was too!)

Yes Nutty, lump is the correct word there. I have a recollection of the crowd getting on his back and Ron Saunders substituting him in some dire division 2 game in 1969 or 70. Funny how I can''t recall any of his goals but I do seem to recall that he was not to bad with his head. Not in the same class as Hughie Curran who was quick on his feet and good in the air.

John Manning was also good in the air but very much in the carthorse class when it came to speed and footwork. I always thought that he was very much like Ralph Hunt. Probably he was well before most posters time but they were the days when centre forwards were big old boys who would run through a brick wall to get at the ball.

I believe Conlon was one of Lol Morgans signinings who was cleared out when Saunders came. We had several big old centre forwards during that dire footballing period of the 1960s to 1970. Bryan Whitehouse and Jim Conway spring immediately to mind.

Why is this thread stretched to about 3 times the width of my screen? I was going to contribute but got pissed off trying to read the threads. So now you who are so inclined know what to do to shut me up!! I know how to compress ardee to RD. So how come the techies can''t shrink back the screen (or prevent it happening in the first place)???

Maybe it''s high science; which of course is an entirely different thing to technology - but I digress!

Somebody please shrink back the thread - it''s driving us old greybeards bananas.[:''(]

Can''t work out why it''s stretched - but it''s driving me nuts too. Pete (thank heavens) is back tomorrow, so if I haven''t sorted it, he will

In Lappin''s defence, the finger points at another poster in this instance. I won''t say who.

And all before you''re back tomorrow, Pete.

You really must tell us how you do that!

Anyway, thanks - I was getting dizzy.

He was an enigma I will admit but what a player if fortune had been on our side and his . arrdee.

Yep Ricardo of course I remember John Manning , Ricardo I am devastated I thought you read my posts , Didn''t you read that I composed

that song ? which was my second biggest hit behind Black is Black . well its all a charade isn''t it Dick , I don''t think I am going to talk to you again  ever.

broken hearted .[;)] arrdee.

Sorry Ray. I was just trying to plug the song for you. Who knows, you might consider re-releasing an updated version called "The Dion Dub-lin"

Words and Music by Ray Ducker and Bob Dylan.

You didn''t have any part in those other great hits of the sixties did you?

"Jimmy Bone, Superstar" and "Sixfoot two Eyes of Blue Duncan Forbes is after You"

Now Ricardo I just wish I could do links to bring you what I posted months ago .

I don''t understand what you are saying because I am sure you replied to my original post.

I think you are joshing me Dick . I don''t know about that other fellow Dylan you are on about ,

I think he might hold me back .[:D]  arrdee.

I''ve been talking to an old friend of mine tonight, (Albert Bennett, remember him?) He told me that Bryan Conlon was sadly killed in a car accident. One name I''d almost forgotten from that era was Freddie Sharpe and another, Geof Butler. Albert seems to remember big Dunc playing right back at one stage.

Arrdee, good thread, I take back everything I said about exposing the bribes scandal !!   [:D]

Yep I remember George Waites Lapp , we signed him as a right winger from L Orient but I think we tried to do the same as we had done with the great Jimmy Hill turn him into what we called an inside forward or midfield as it is now . I thought this is easy all we have to do is buy a tricky winger and play him as a inside forward and we have another Jimmy Hill on our hands , I cant think why other teams hadn''t thought of this but after seeing George''s attempts I could see why ,oh dear he was next to useless , he never had a clue .

A former London taxi driver I seem to recall , I wonder if he ever went back to that profession ? I think that was what he was better suited at .arrdee.
