ipswich v leicester attendance last night

Recommended Posts

Despite probably there best run of home form ever the binners managed the grand total of 17,938 against leicester last night.

Pathetic!

Any ipswich fans(cos im sure there is a few who have a sneaky look on here) want to try and justify this?

There team may be performing better than us at the moment(although roeder is slowly turning the tide) but they can have no arguments at who is the better supported team.

I think thats a no!! They dont wish to justify it!! I certainly remember there being higher attendances when they were in the PL?!? And also saw lots more ipswich shirts around essex etc when they were in the PL as well!

That figure isn''t too bad when you compare it to other championship clubs. It''s when it''s compared to their own expectations that things look bad.

A few thousand off that figure and you are looking at a half empty stadium, something that would have been the fact had the club they were playing not been so close and the weather a bid worse - both possible.

Current form doesn''t look good either. A win through the curtesy of a dodgy penalty and a wrong sending off hardly amounts to anything credible. With a paper thin squad and no injuries they are riding their luck but for how long ?

No sponsor for the North Stand, shirt sponsorship ending and revenue falling year in year out the slide is all too apparent. A good run may mask this to the simple minded folk in suffolk but the warning signs are there.

Even the much lauded takeover is now looking not what it seemed. The debt is still in place, in fact the interest charges are now to resume. Control has been handed over to a ruthless asset stripping group and the rather naive ruritanian administration is to be overseen by a bunch of hardfaced businessmen.

The end is nigh

DESPITE a 14-match unbeaten home run stretching back to last March, attendances at Portman Road appear to be falling. Elvin King investigates why

IPSWICH Town are losing £90,000 every home game compared to the season they returned to Division One.

Their average attendance figure at Portman Road has dropped by around 4,500 over the last six seasons.

Where have all the disappearing fans gone and it is as big a mystery as to why the Blues are currently playing so well at home and so poorly away.

Why have Portman Road attendances dropped so dramatically when the entertainment value has soared?

Tuesday''s gate for the Coca-Cola Championship 3-1 victory over Leicester City was the lowest for an Ipswich home league match since they drew 1-1 with Sheffield United in the old Division One on Saturday January 29 2000.

Despite winning 13 and drawing one of their last 14 home games the Blues could only attract 17,938 for their game against Ian Holloway''s Foxes.

The figure for the Blades game in the campaign when George Burley led the Tractor Boys into the Premiership via the play-offs was 17,350.

Jim Magilton''s side has found the net a stunning 41 times in the last 14 matches at Portman Road, and no one can complain at the entertainment offered.

In the last six seasons, Ipswich''s average home crowd figures have dropped from 25,455 to the level so far this season of 20,889.

At an average of £20 a ticket this represents a loss of around £90,000 every home game.

With two games against unattractive sides coming up against Scunthorpe and Burnley in the traditionally slow period prior to Christmas, Tuesday''s figure could be reduced even further before an expected bumper New Year''s Day attendance against Tony Mowbray''s West Bromwich Albion.

Blues chief executive Derek Bowden admits that budget figures are going to be reduced based on recent home gates, but he said that there will be no financial concerns caused by the drop.

“Even without the planned investment from Marcus Evans, the drop in attendances would not have a detrimental affect on our finances,” said Bowden.

“We are conscious that we are not alone in this downward trend, and I don''t believe it is about price.

“The mix of matches we have had so far have been less attractive than in the first half of last season - and there have been reduced numbers of visiting fans coming to Portman Road.

“At this time of year the extra expense caused by Christmas plays a part, and we have been allocated six home games in just over a month starting with the Leicester fixture.”

By this time in 2006/07, Ipswich had already entertained Norwich City, West Brom and Sunderland, which helped to swell attendance figures.

Only Colchester this season have brought more than 2,000 fans with them with Barnsley only bringing 331, Coventry 403, Preston 406 and Southampton 414.

Compare this with the 3,080 Town supporters who travelled to Charlton last Saturday with over a 1,000 making their way to Bristol City midweek and it is evident Ipswich''s rivals enjoy the visits of the Tractor Boys.

Bowden confirmed that Ipswich season ticket sales were up to budget with over 14,000 sold and he added: “We have recently sold 300 half-yearly season tickets.

“There are big demands on people''s wallets at this time of year, and we have not budgeted high returns for our next two matches.

“But with the games we have still to come, we are looking for the average figure to be similar to last season.

“If we get into the top six for the final months of the campaign it will see an increase in interest.

“No one can deny our home form, and we are confident we will continue to play football that will draw in the crowds in the weeks ahead.”

The Leicester game saw the first bite of winter weather and a big live Champions League game on TV. It also came on the back of two pretty dreadful away displays.

Coupled with a run of home matches and Christmas expenditure the drop could have been predicted.

But it is still a worrying trend, and one that might only be altered by a return to the Premier League with Town''s gates on their return to Division One in 2002 - helped by an increase in ground capacity - producing much higher attendances than now.

Ipswich are reducing prices for their FA Cup third round match against Portsmouth on January 5 - with adult admission £20, concessions £10 and children £5.

AVERAGE HOME ATTENDANCES

The Invisible Man''s money will be perfectly visible, however. Not that we really need it. Jim Magilton has built a side capable of reaching the play-offs with virtually a mixture of youth team players and free transfers. We haven''t paid any sizeable transfer money for years. It shows it can be done, so there is hope for you yet. There is no doubt our attendances have been disappointing and I genuinely marvel at how your attendances have stood up. The one mitigating circumstance for own attendances has been the poor away form - and of course an away performance always precedes a home game! To be well beaten at Charlton wasn''t the best advert for a home game against Leicester City. And so it goes on. When we finally win away, another couple of thousand "fickles" will probably come along. Also it has to be said - with no arrogance intended - that our ground holds a few thousand more than yours. If you do eventually increase your capacity, you will find that you have a lot less season-ticket holders but a lot more who will pick-and-choose their games. Sad but true.

I remember Cardiff were in a stronger league position about this time. And now we have a club mired in defeat struggling to stay afloat.Any comparison with the charity robbers down south ? Other than playing in blue nott hat much ........ however.....Falling gates, falling revenue and now to be used as a way of disposing of unwanted losses from elsewhere. Rather like wiping * off your boots.Thousands of simple minded farmhands learning that their shares are now pretty worthless - the (un)Farepak of 2007. " Were rich your poor Deal with it!"Glad to see that at least you recognise your current standing. Though I''m not sure what my poor is, or why deal has a capital letter. Nor really what sure what  "you are know on the rivals sites" means either. One can only speculate that you spend most of your waking hours posting drivel on other club''s sites and so believe that others have the same desperate existence. Maybe that explains your illiteracy. Your mind is so over exited by your obsession with the charity robbers that your podgy little six fingers can''t type fast enough. What a desperate sad and lonely life you must live.Bye bye, loser.

You might be "rich" at the moment, binner, but things can soon change. How much does darling Jimbo have to spend? £20 million? I hope he spends it very, very wisely indeed (that''s a lie, I mean quite the opposite, in fact!). Anyway, unless that money is invested in the right players, the best you can hope for is promotion to the Premiership, a couple of seasons of struggle and then you''ll be straight back down again where you belong. Once the money''s gone, it''s gone, unless, of course, you can find another fool to invest in your crappy club! Sunderland have spent at least double your paltry pot and have a good manager, but they could well be back in the Championship soon.

It''s much too early for you and your tiny band of Ips..t followers to get all smug and triumphal.

No it''s the perfect time to be smug our two clubs are heading in completely different directions, if we go up and come back down again, WHO CARES? we will have made £30 odd million and had a bloody good time enjoying it! I would much rather be a yo yo club than one who looks destined to remain in the chumpionship/league 1 for the foreseable future!

As for the money being gone our new owner is reported to be a BILLIONAIRE and has already stated that he intends to invest more money if it is needed once this war chest has gone!

You lot on the other hand got a rubbish little loan from those Turners!!!!! Big deal!

Norwich should pay attention to what has happend at Ipswich.

The main reason for the drop off in support is mainly because of the poor job their board has done.

They have had to contiually sell their best players every year........... its sends the "no ambition" message to the fans.

I am hoping people dont look back at us in 5 years and say....... do you remember in 2007 when we used to get 25,000 nearly every game.
