Information to clarify loan signing regulations

Recommended Posts

Courtesy of Teresa:

There are 2 kinds of loan signings:

  1. Standard Loans

  2. Emergency loans

  1. Standard loans - These signings can only be made in the transfer windows, and can last the whole season, (but may be for a shorter period). The maximum number of standard loan signings is 8: a maximum of 4 over 23 year olds, and a maximum of 4 under 23 year olds.

  2. Emergency loans - These signings can take place in the transfer windows, but may also take place outside of them: from the closure of the summer window up until 5p.m. on the 4th Thursday in November; and from the closing of the new year window until 5p.m. on the 4th Thursday in March. There is no limit on the number of these signings, but these must last for a minimum of 28 days and a maximum of 93 days. If an emergency loan player returns to his home club, he can return as a standard loan player(in the transfer windows only, and if the standard loan signings for the club have not reached the maximum in terms of the restrictions outlined above), or he can return as an emergency loan player as long as the total loan period over the season does not exceed 93 days(the minimum 28 day loan does not apply as they will already have completed the minimum).

  • In all cases, the players named for a match day (including substitutes) can include a maximum of 5 loan players regardless of how many are on loan at the club.

Cheers Pete - is there also a stipulation that while we canhave 5 on a match day squad only 4 can be on the pitch at any one time?   I think it was leeds who breached that bit a year or so ago?  Or has it changed?

5 is fine. Leeds used 6:

Leeds United have been fined £2,000 after they included six loan players in their squad for the game at Burnley on 28 November.

Football League rules stipulate that only five on-loan players are allowed to feature on the match-day team sheet.
