BCanary 0 Posted November 16, 2007 Helveg just didn''t cut the mustard in this league at all. No better than Edworthy was - only much older and on probably triple his wage.
Syteanric 1 Posted November 16, 2007 Thomas Helveg featured in our last 8 games of the premiership season... ion those last 8 games our form turned Dramatically and we nearly stayed up...yes.. we do miss a former international and european/UEFA cup winnerjas :)
BBFF 0 Posted November 16, 2007 He was here for the ride and the money and nothing more, he never pulled on the yellow and green for pride.FOOTBALL MUST COME FIRST

As I would expect from a long time Barclay "inmate" you know the score.Helveg was a touch of class and a cool head when played in his correct position of right back. Up until the tail end of the season he had featured occasionally and usually out of position.
Pete Raven 276 Posted November 16, 2007 Too good for City and too good for the Championship.
lobster catcher 0 Posted November 16, 2007 Prehaps if worthy had shown a bit of faith in him at the beginning of the season we might have stayed up.Over 100 caps for denmark dosn''t lie.He struggled in his first few games but who dosn''t when they come to a new country.Imo him playing regularly was the turning point in our season.Dosn''t anyone remember his performance against newcastle.I think this thread demostrates the difference between people who have played football before and know what they are talking about, and people who have only ever been paying fans and know squat about real football
First Jedi 0 Posted November 16, 2007 He always thought he looked very classy everytime he slid the ball perfectly to the feet of his opposite number.
people who have played football
How very arrogant of you! I play twice a week, and he is was a pile of toss for us. Except, admittedly, for a few occassions when the entire team was playing well and he played average.
Over 100 caps for denmark dosn''t lie
The difference being that for those 100 games he actually gave a monkeys and wasn''t there to milk out some retirement savings. BCanary 0 Posted November 16, 2007 And here I was thinking it was Dean Ashton''s goals that turned our season around (if you can describe it that way - because let''s face it - we weren''t that much better)Helveg was too slow and unable to adapt properly to the English game. People seem to romanticise about how good he was just because he played for Denmark in his prime

InLambertWeTrust! 0 Posted November 16, 2007 JC it is a point of view not fact. The simple truth is nothing turned our season around, we still went down.
Snakepit Boy 0 Posted November 16, 2007 This might sound a bit odd, but I really think he was too good for us. Not in an arrogant way, but in the sense that he''d been playing with world-class players throughout his career. He didn''t really make it with us, but it wasn''t through a lack of effort (unlike, say, Etutu).I remember a terrible sideways pass that he made without looking at Stamford Bridge, which led directly to a Chelsea goal. At the time I remember thinking that the reason he hadn''t looked up before making the pass was because he''d spent his career playing almost telepathically alongside decent players who would have been able to read his mind. At Norwich, he suddenly found himself alongside some more "ordinary" players who didn''t have the sixth sense that many of his former Milan team-mates would have had.Helveg was by no means blameless for his failure with us, but I think he was better than many people give him credit for. Pete Raven 276 Posted November 16, 2007 I think going from playing alongside Costacurta, Cannavaro, Maldini, Gattuso, Albertini to playing in our team would be a culture shock for any player...
Buncey 1 Posted November 16, 2007 I must have been seeing a different player to some of you. If I recall he was superb when he was put back in at RB instead of edworthy. If I recall he did some excellent crossing to create quite a few goals, one of which against Newcastle in the last minute of time. He was poor to start with but as the season got on he got better and was a very good professional. He made the difference with a couple of others, that took us off the bottom and nearly saved us. Lurd 0 Posted November 16, 2007 Excatly, imagine having to adapt from having Maldini and Nesta in your back four to Gary Doherty and Craig Fleming.. Imagine having been used to Pirlo and Kaka spraying the ball around and you finding yourself in a team with Gary Holt! Its hard to defend him because he should have thought about this before he signed but how was he to know we''d be so bad? Syteanric 1 Posted November 16, 2007 agreed about that sideways pass. Simon charlton or Paolo Maldini.. not a hard choice is it?just an Aside Lurd, i dont believe Helveg played alongside Kaka, Kaka was recovering from a swimming accident which nearly crippled him and didnt sigh for Milan till about 2004 i think... jas :)
0ridgemanddMMyyyy0Falseen-USTrue 0 Posted November 16, 2007 Lets not forget this was the player who Worthington said wasn''t fit enough to play for Norwich but went on to captain his country and playedalmost the full game. The same manager that used Henderson as a sub and left Bentley on the bench. Before we criticise lets look at the bigger picture.

Citizen Journalist Foghorn 0 Posted November 16, 2007 He played about 2 games at right back before being dropped. He then played a few games out of position at right wing and central midfield before finally getting back in the fold during our decent run at the end of the season after Worthy''s infamous ''I didnt want anyone to say they didnt get a chance'' comment before the Man United game... which resulted in the likes of Safri, Bentley, Shax and Helveg getting a run of games...In those first feew games he seemed to play his passes ahead of players - probably expecting them to move for the ball... He was never great for us - but did a good job in those 8 games at the end of the season which made you wonder if he could have been any good having been given more of a chance at the start of the season. Mason 47 1,924 Posted November 16, 2007 Yes I think the point where Helveg really showed his class was that incisive, inch-perfect pass to the other team against Chelsea!
lobster catcher 0 Posted November 16, 2007 Dosn''t this thread just show how hard it is to please all the people some of the time.Helveg is rated from 0-10 by various posters. All these people would have been at games watching him ,yet very few agree to how good he really was. This just proves how very different we all are and shows what a hard job it is to run a football club successfully in the fans eyes.I really believe we will never remove this board by protest alone because the unspoken majority are the people the board pretend to listen too.The only thing this board understands is loss of income ie empty seats ,empty deilas, empty yellows and so many pies left that hartson couldn''t eat them.Thing is why should 20000 people who have paid in advance get nothing for their money
One Flew Over... 33 Posted November 16, 2007 Which Man U player did Helveg clothesline when he went past him in our match at Old Trafford? A classy piece of defending IMO!
Buncey 1 Posted November 16, 2007 I can''t remember but I do remember that for the mc kenzie goal (for 1-0) safri completely crunched rooney to start the goal squence off. Hahahaha rooney chased after him but saffer''s slid the ball off to hux before he could get to him.
Barclay_Boy 0 Posted November 16, 2007 Helveg was one of the worst defenders ever to put on a City shirt. Not sure I would even want him in the current team! A classic case of an over the hill foreign mercenary who only came here for the cash.
HOCKEYMYHERO 0 Posted November 16, 2007 Why is it all international or players well rated elsewere seem to forget what they came here for or do not seem to [ FIT IN ? ] as a certain mr Brazil would say WHY ???
Beaker 0 Posted November 16, 2007 helveg was crud.he played about 2 games all season and got skinned by wes brown on a number of occassions. p.s. Jas "The Barclay King" you really have too much time on your hands
