The Interview Process

Recommended Posts

The whole managerial interview process is,imo, another sympton of the amateurism of the board. If the owners were really in control of events they would know their football inside out -that is they would already know who were the best available managers in the country.

They should have been proactively searching for the next manager regardless of  the performance of the existing manager because very few managers last for more than five seasons at a club. Jones if he was up to the job, would have a list in his back pocket and actively maintain lines of communications open over the seasons. I don''t think it would be too difficult to persuade a good prospect over to Sunday lunch a few times?

Instead, Smith and Jones seem totally unprepared. As though they are totally out of their depth.

Interviews are for Accounts Clerks fresh out of school. The next manager should have been known by Smith and Jones even before Grant left the building.

It would seem common sense that a replacement list should have been lined up some weeks ago but not this board, interesting that they had to take advice fron others outside the club one of those reported to be Bobby Robson. Robson the man who during a TV interview a few years ago forgot what country he was in. Don''t hold your breath.

Good post. So any prospective new manager can expect, during his contracted period to be constantly undermined by the boards search for a better man. Even the day afrter a great win somewhere you hear that Doncaster is having lunch with some rival manager of Lincoln City in a Happy Eater somewhere.Great post mate, well thought out.

So just out of interest why do you still back the board?

Ummm, in case it has escaped your attention we finished last season in 16th place and have been sinking lower pretty much since the start of the season. As Grant was widely regarded and lauded for being an honorable bloke it was hardly beyond the realms of possibility that he would hold his hands up and say "I`m not up to it", in fact it was a very real possibility. A bit of groundwork in sounding out alternatives/putting feelers out should be expected and is only sensible in that situation.

As per usual though, our board were sitting back, fingers crossed that we just might improve and they won`t have to divert funds from the latest office development to that pesky football side of the business.

The longer it goes on, makes me think that they haven''t really got a suitable candidate for the hot-seat.....Or they''re waiting for a huge fanfare and hailing the arrival of........a complete unknown.

It''s a bit like expecting a brand new shiny bike for Christmas! Getting up on Xmas morning and excitedly dashing downstairs and into the living room......Only to find Santa''s left you a second-hand pair of in-line roller blades (that are a size too small for you).
On the contrary, they have already made up their minds...announcement Thursday or Friday at latest.
Collective or individual minds, so 5 or 6 manager''s are actually appointed?

I totally agree, I don''t know any other club who goes through weeks of interviews. Most clubs identify who they want (within reason) and go out and get them!

Totally agree, after 4 games without a win or goal under Grant any sensible person would have been preparing for what could happen.  It''s not about undermining a manager, the board didn''t have to speak to anyone but they could have been drawing up a shortlist in case.

I''m afraid the undermining argument just does not work.  Most clubs and managers  are looking for new players before the transfer window opens.  Does that undermine the players?

Every manager is, or at least should be, on the lookout for better players than he already has. It''s called squad improvement.
By the same token the board has got to keep their eyes open to who is up-and-coming, who''s got potential, be they managers, coaches, physios, sports scientists, whoever or whatever.

Compare us with Spurs. Ramos moves into position, seamlessly taking over the reigns with a minimum of upset to the players. Our lot remain leaderless and rudderless.

We can''t even find a new first-team coach to replace Hunter who, if you remember, left at the beginning of the season.

Exactly.  What the hell can Doncaster and co find out during an interview?  They were certainly easily led by a motormouth like Grant.
Don''t forget Bolton.  It''s been three weeks since Grant''s departure and Norwich are still continuing with their interview process and Bolton in the meantime have not only sacked Sammy Lee but have gone out and got their man AND he''s had his first match in charge.  Surely people in the game know the credentials of the limited pool of potential managerial candidates without the need for all the repeat interviews that could see our recruitment process spin out for over a month!  Spurs and Bolton clearly do.
