Winston Churchill anyone?

Almost to a man (and woman), posters are queuing up to say we must have ''experience'', we must have a ''name'' manager. Those who are young and / or lack this ''experience'' need not apply apparently. Surely you are missing the point.

What matters is ABILITY, not experience or previous managerial jobs. Football management is no different (ultimately) to any other form of management. It''s all about people skills and man management. If your manager also has the right management team around him that is critical also, they can provide the skills and support that he may lack but together they should do the job. Remember Clough and Taylor? What did one do without the other, not a lot.

PG failed for many reasons and not all were within his control e,g. the enforced sale of Ernie and Ethu. It was his man management that stuffed him and ultimately led to player dissatisfaction (in my view).

If the new man is age 65 and has 30 years ''management'' experience - fine, as long as he has the right ability. Similarly I would have no problems at all with a 35 year old just starting out and who may now be in a coaching, asst. manager role somewhere or even just finishing playing, provided again that he has the right ability. There is a bandwagon for Paul Ince but what experience did he have when Macclesfield  took him on? None. Did a good job though! Conversely we took on Rioch and then Hamilton - both were ''experienced'' managers yet we all know what happened!

Rioch was well and truly shafted by ''you know who'' but you get my point?

Another point - most of the names that are being thrown about, try asking yourself WHY these people are still out of work?

The Churchill link? Simple - in 1940 he had no ''experience'' of being PM and was viewed as a loose cannon and a maverick. What he did have though was a bucketful of leadership qualities. The rest (thank God!) is history.
