Southampton after Mettomo

Recommended Posts

Southampton manager George Burley has confirmed the club''s interest in Cameroon defender Lucien Mettomo.

The 30-year-old stopper has been training with the Saints over the past week after being released by Swiss side Lucerne.

And Burley appears keen to bring in the former Manchester City man as cover for the injured Claus Lundekvam and Darren Powell.

Speaking in the Southern Daily Echo, Burley said: "He had a

trial with us and we are looking to bring him in on a short-term basis.

"He is an experienced centre half and with Claus having an operation and Darren Powell out it''s something we''ve been lacking."

Fitness issues

It had been reported that several other Championship clubs had shown

interest in Mettomo, only to turn him down over concerns over his

fitness.

However, Burley does not feel that this is a major problem.

"Maybe he''s not fully fit but that will come and we are trying to get something sorted out."
Grant did not rate him, we must trust his judgement in these matters [:S]
Because Burley has such a good record of signing African players [:p]
