broadie 0 Posted June 30, 2007 I don''t mind that Earnie has gone - although it annoys me he left for Derby, of all people. The money will be good for us - Grant can hopefully build a balanced squad now.The get-out clause was a disgrace - not the clause itself but the amount. But herein lies the question:Why, knowing that Worthy was was struggling, did they make such a rash signing in the first place? Why, knowing the clause they had written in, didn''t the board do their utmost to sign players of a similar quality to Earnshaw last summer? We all knew that failure to strengthen the squad would screw us over when injuries hit, and sure enough it did. Why didn''t the board see this? What''s the point of signing a £3.5m player and surrounding him with players worth a tenth of that? Isn''t that why Ashton went? We failed to replace the players we lost after relegation and have been paying for it ever since. The selling of Earnie is a direct result of his panicked signing. It smacked of desperation by both the board and Worthy back then (something to appease the fans) and therefore it''s ironic that it ends like this.Grant must now be allowed to build his squad but without blowing stacks of cash on one player - but I think he is savvy enough to do that.I hope this is the end of this sorry period in our club''s history. Maybe now the board will realise how utterly stupid they have been and will come out and be honest with us about their mistakes. Somehow I doubt it. (By the way - strangely, I still think the board has the club''s best financial interests at heart, I just think they are incredibly naiive and refuse to learn any lessons. Just for once, it would be nice if they owned up to it. Get a football person on the board, someone who can foresee potential problems, because this lot might be good at keeping our heads above water but when it comes to football they haven''t got a clue. However, at least let the manager build his squad before we unsettle them with protests etc.)Welcome back Jamie. OTBC
