Grant wants Cureton-Delia says NO!

Recommended Posts

This is a rumour i have heard today and want to know if anyone else has heard the same. I must stress im not saying this is true or not its just a rumour going round that i would like to know if there is any truth to. Right here goes-Peter Grant is a big Cureton fan and very keen to bring  him back, however there is 1 big stumbling block. Delia has said no because "apparantly" when he was here last Delia thought he was too much of a trouble maker { mainly for going out on the beer } and thinks he is more trouble than hes worth. Anyone else heard this as its the 1st time i have. This is not an anti Delia post i just want to know if theres any truth to this.

I really hope thetey don''t hold this against him. I liked a beer or two when I was in my twenties! Most of us calm down by the time we''re 30, don''t we!?!

Wouldn''t be at all surprised to find out this was true, would just back up the "nicey nice" soft image of the club under Delialala. Pathetic, in other words.

Since Grant joined I''ve been impressed by the fact that he despises this image, and wants to change it - one case in point being before the FA Cup tie vs Chelsea when he mentioned that "it''s been said that going to Chelsea is a big, fun day out for Norwich City, but we''re better than that" - probably the sort of thing that would make him resign too.

Funny how we''ve never heard Delia''s opinion on any other transfer target isn''t it? I''m not suggesting for one minute that you''re making this up Arthur but it''s a little bit convenient for me.

Ex-Norwich player who claims to love club and is still highly thought of by most fans wants to come back but nasty Delia won''t let him because he used to be a bit naughty. Pretty much ticks every box for those of you who want to dish out more stick to Delia doesn''t it?

I think you''re being stitched up or you''ve just made it up yourself.......no offence.

if this turns out to be true (which i doubt) then

1. Grant should say "Balls to Delia" as he is the manager.. he will soon leave if he doesnt get the player he wants...

and

2. How come someone who was a jack the lad 10 years ago would be turned down yet someone like Chris Brown, a known trouble maker at sunderland.. is signed?

jas :)

This does not sound true at all.  Cureton is now 31, and not a young ''lad'' any more.  If it was true, that would mean Delia was making personal decisions about signing players, and would surely see the leagues top scorer as a good addition?  Plus would Grant stand for being dictated to in such a manner?  Also, the people within the club always say that Wynn Jones is the steering one, Delia is more of a figurehead.

Perhaps if we sign Sharp, Cureton and keep Earnie, plus sign a few other people, then finally we can stop the ''lacking ambition'' rubbish.  It might also prove the rumour that our new investors, poo-pooed by some, have put in a lot more than a loan!

If this had any truth in it, don''t you think she would have stopped Brown or Ostemboor joining, to protect the "Norwich" image?

I very much doubt Delia has much of an input in which players come in to the club, apart from saying if money can be made available or not. She is one of the majority shareholders, not a director of football...

Perhaps Peter Grant should go ask someone else, like the newly appointed Turners.... they seem to have some cash to flutter away...

Delia might not have had any idea about Brown...

Whereas she was here when Cureton left the club.

Sounds just like her, to be honest.

Dont know if this is true or not, but when Jamie was down here we were on good terms through other friends and hes a nice bloke, didnt we all have a drink at that age? He was no worse than anyone else at the time and left because he was homesick.

On another note what did chris brown do?

more like a good business decision.

if he has a bad year, he is worthless, sharp a bad year, or two, people will still pick him up.  and he has a chance to improve.

He filmed one of the regular roasting sessions involving 4 Sunderland players (none of the players involved are at the club anymore - Roy Keane was not impressed).   You can find it on the web if you try hard enough.

FYI He was down Optic last night with the awful Donkerty getting hammered.

So Cureton likes a drink or two, hardly makes him unique, this is all hearsay and gossip.  I am sure if last season has anything to go by, Cureton can''t have been out getting slaughtered too often.

Arthur, whatever the reason behind your post or  that of the instigator of this rumour, one thing  is certain, a player who is always thinking more of the beer than his own physical fitness is not going to last long at this club (Mulryne and Rivers being recent examples of players not up to the task of keeping themselves fit in body and attitude).

I doubt if Delia''s personal opinion on a player is likely to sway Grant''s professional opinion much.  What Grant is looking for is someone who can be relied on to score goals.  If Cureton fits the bill, then he will be a contender for transfer action.

I totally agree, for eight years I managed bars and pubs up and down the country, now I''m a Muslim!  so people can change!

While at Sunderland Chris Brown gave the commentry on a Porn video starring some of his other team mates.

Personally I can''t see Delia saying no to Cureton based on his past actions.

I could see her asking questions like "are you sure you want another

striker?"  or "are you sure that he is worth colchester''s

valuation?".  But then the board is supposed to ask those

questions to make sure the manager is getting players he actually

needs.  I would expect the answer to the second to be yes, and the

first i''m not so sure about.

Sorry, but I don''t agree. If sharp has a bad year or two his value will drop like a stone! Surly it''s a better business decision to spend 750.000 on a proven goal scorer at this level who loves the club, than 2.500.000 on someone who hasn''t proved himself at this level and wants to go to Wolves? Curteton plus 1.75.000 million in the bank. Better. Yeah better...

As i said this is all news to me and i have no reason to make it up it was mentioned to me from someone who  used to live with cureton. Apparently thats why he was sent packing the first time round. I agree that even Delia would find it hard to stop PG from signing a player he liked but it could have a certain influence if PG wasnt 110 percent sure Cureton was the right man for city. Why,Shack, do you at first say you are not suggesting ive made it up and then at the end imply that i might of done? Come on, im sure even im allowed to have a post without someone getting there back up because of my views on Mrs smith.

Hmm? sounds a tad fishy to me, and you all know that I love a good old conspiracy theory!.

The one stumbling block I have in believing this is that I can''t see any manager worth his salt, let alone Grant, being dictated to who he can and cannot sign by a director/owner.

Otherwise, what would be the point of having a manager.

This is one of the reasons he was let go originally, he couldn''t apply himself and the drinking was a symptom of that.

Jamie was always a nice lad, but he was plucked from his family at a young age to an area where he had few connections outside the club and struggled to find ways to pass his time and spend his money when not training/playing.

As happens with so many players they need the wake up call of being released to finally realise they haven''t ''made it'' yet and get their backsides in gear.

I''m very good friends with someone who spent a lot of time with Jamie when he was here, and with him being a bit of a hero while he was here I was always keen to chat about him and the sort of person he was, and it was interesting to here about the lad behind the headlines.

However to suggest Delia would be personally blocking this move stretches belief for me and is far to convenient. As others have mentioned we took on Brown and Hucks has had plenty of rumours surrounding him for years as well (which i''m sure you''ve all heard).

Nothing in this one for me, shame it had to be posted as it will now be ''gospel'' for a lot of people (as seen in this thread).

I was on friendly terms with Jamie through mutual mates and he wasnt let go, he wanted a move closer to his family, hence why he dropped a league{ or was it 2 } for £250,000 to bristol rovers. Friends lost touch with him so no idea how he feels now, but back then he was simply homesick and perhaps this is why he was on the beer so much.

Agree entirely on the home sick thing, one of the big difficulties of football is bringing young lads a long way from home and, sometimes, leaving them to their own devices too much. Didn''t work out for Jamie, does for some. That was a point I was trying ot make in the next part of the OP, sorry if that wasn''t clear, wasn''t intending to cast him in a bad light.

I''ll bow to your better connections on whether we let him go or he asked to go, except to say had he made the step up to the first team as he was capable of doing, i don''t think we''d of been ''letting him go'' to Bristol Rovers for that sort of fee!
