Welcome Home Mullers and Macca - Now keep playing like that!

Recommended Posts

Lets hope last night signals the re-arrival of our NI duo and sorts out our badly stuttering midfield that is threatening to drag us down the table!

Back in pre-season, when it looked like our team would consist of Iwan and WLY up front, a seemingly past it Malky and a young un-tried Briggs in defence, I thought our midfield was going to be our only real asset for the season by some margin. Brennan came with glowing reports from my Forest mates, Francis looked set to be a great addition to complement Mulryne and Holt and we had a variety of players who could fit in on the right. As it is, Steddy Eddie came in last minute, Malky appears to have got younger as the season has progressed and we all know what happened up front. And now it''s the midfield that has become the ever increasing source of concern. Why?

As the season goes on, more and more Worthy has to chop and change in midfield to try and get it working properly. Where the front and back men pick themselves, the midfield is becoming more and more of a headache. They''ve been bullied off the park for large parts of the last three games and it''s only a solid defence, the odd spark of brilliance up front and large slices of luck that has somehow allowed us to win games in which we have been second best. BUT, if last night is a signal for the rest of the season, the timing could not have been better and may just be what we need to pull us over the finishing line.

KEEP THE FAITH - EVENTHOUGH IT''S DIFFICULT AT TIMES!!

a1, you''re absolutely right - hopefully last night will prove a turning point in the way we play. I think Mullers deserves another chance now - I think he''s been pretty good in his last couple of sub appearances, and Francis isn''t playing as well as he could currently. Plus the fact the Mulryne always tries to pass the ball - something which we''ve been missing in a few performances of late.

As for McVeigh, it''s obvious he''s happier down the left than the right. I appreciate we haven''t got anyone who can really claim the right side as their own, and we have an impressive Brennan also vying for the left wing slot, but there''s no point playing WLYP if we''re not going to get the best out of him. Stick with Hendo down the right as the best option and sit back and watch WLYP play like he did last night!!

What about trying Brennan on the right? It seems to be a trend these days to play wingers on their opposite foot and have them cut in - it certainly works for Pires. And Brennan has a monster of a shot on him too, could up our goal rate yet further...?

Could be worth a try, Mook! Nobody in the team seems able to claim the spot as their own, so I don''t see why we shouldn''t try alternatives. The only thing I would say is that whilst McVeigh obviosly likes cutting in from the left, he has two good feet and can cross with his left if necessary - such as last night for Mullers'' goal. I''m not sure Brennan''s right foot is much use except for standing on...

Sorry Mook, the search goes on - don''t feel Brennan''s right peg is up to crossing or tackling. I want to see Brennan at left back in place of Drury. Some people will want me strung up for saying it but i think he has most of the defensive ability of Drury (maybe not all) and can offer A LOT more going forward. And it is his natural position. It also gives you Brennan McVeigh and Huckerby down the left side, all of whom link up very well together. Drury has failed to develop his game going forward and i think it could start to cost him if Brennan gains some consistency.
I just hope Mullers and Macca can play like last night against a four man midfield, Mullers excels with time on the ball. He won''t get that against 11 men and a four man midfield.

Mulryne changed the game last night, and unlike Damien he actually looked interested and made some good telling passes. He gave poor old Holt some much needed support. I thought our formation in the second half was spot on, Hendo also got much more confident when given some decent balls and a bit of space- witness his calmness when given the free kick which resulted in the first goal. If Mulryne could play like that every time he would be vying with Hux as the first name on the teamsheet.
And I thought young Jason did very well too.
