Boyo 0 Posted June 11, 2007 At the moment we are looking for a new keeper and as Marshall looks like he''s going to sign a new contract with celtic we are going to have to look a bit further a field. We struggled to find a good keeper last season and that is quite strange for norwich city as over the years we have had some brilliant keepers. (my dad is saying this because i am only 12 and i haven''t had a season ticket for long and my dad has been watching norwich for ages) the keepers that he has liked and thought have been fantastic players for norwich are: Kevin Keelan, Chris Woods, Bryan Gunn and Robert Green. Overall though he thinks the best player who has played between the sticks is Kevin Keelan. What do you think?
In Dubious Battle 0 Posted June 11, 2007 I''m not all that old either so really it''s only been gunn, marshall (scum), green & gallagher as regulars since i''ve been going to carrow road. Bryan Gunn was an absolute legend, so much so that because of him i wanted to become a goal keeper when i was a kid, i wasn''t good enough of course. But i think Robert Green was probably the finest keeper i''ve ever seem play for city.
Bernard Futter 0 Posted June 11, 2007 Er, not the slightest doubt on that one!
AJ 1,307 Posted June 11, 2007 Keelan was easily the best ''keeper we have had at City for sometime, his ability was miles ahead of the others.Bryan Gunn was also a good ''keeper, and he played with his heart which can add so much to a players game.I personally feel Green was highly over rated, and as you can see at West Ham, he needs a good defence infront of him, otherwise he is useless. Herb 0 Posted June 11, 2007 Wasn''t around to see Keelan in action, saw the rest and Gunny is my choice. My brother saw Keelan though and was best mates with his son, and reckons KK was the best.Biased? I dunno, but the fact is all successful City sides over the years have had a quality keeper.
Dame to Blame 105 Posted June 11, 2007 Keelan by a country mile but Chris Woods was also very good .
Old Shuck 274 Posted June 11, 2007 Purely from my times of watching and supporting Norwich, Chris Woods gets my vote, but only just, over Gunny.Woods had few weaknesses, he was very confident and capable with any kind of scenario, he took control of the penalty area, came out and dealt with crosses/corners very well, marshalled his defence well -not easy with two big characters like Watson & Bruce in front of him-and was a great shot stopper. One save in particular he made, at Luton, in, I think, 1988 was unbelievable. He would also have saved Clive Walkers penalty in the 1985 League Cup final-watch the clip, Walker misses but Woods had his left hand side post well covered. He was snapped up as a promising youngster from QPR; Gunny the same, from Aberdeen. Hopefully Marshall will be the next example-he''s certainly head and shoulders above the other keepers we have been linked with.
shropshire-lad 0 Posted June 11, 2007 God I can even just about remember Ken Nethercott! He was a Banks type solid, reliable.Keelan is my King, brilliant keeper and a showman to boot. According to my wife handsome as well, some guys have it all! Then Gunny, Woods, Green, Kennon, A. Marshall, Bensted, Hansbury, Oxford, in that order of preference. There was a short guy in the seventies or eighties did well with Barnsley can''t remember his name. On the fun side we had Grasper Vasper and Big Joe C. Gally ummmm! Never saw Darren Ward for City but done OK with Sunderland.Hopefully Big Joe will be in the Keelan, Gunn, Woods mold of great City keepers.
lappinitup 629 Posted June 11, 2007 Sandy Kennon. A callossus between the sticks. A nervous debut v Sheffield utd but after that....Great.A true legend.
BlyBlyBabes 0 Posted June 12, 2007 We mustn''t forget Sandy Kennon, He also belongs in the pantheon of great City keepers, along with the brave Ken Nethercott. But the King of Kings for me is Kevin Keelan - the best keeper never to play for England. The cat. And the cat had flair and showmanship and attitude and a temper and ............decked an opposing forward, and broke crossbars.......... and was faithful to us and...........Just ask your Dad, son.OTBC
Old Shuck 274 Posted June 12, 2007 Keelan and England?I''ve a book somewhere he wrote in the early 80''s or thereabouts-he talks about how Ron Greenwood picked him for an England match in an unofficial game-think it was a testimonial or something-and how, though he didn''t get a cap, he was very proud and how he stood in front of his bedroom mirror, admiring himself in his England kit-Greenwood told him at any other time, he''d have had many caps for England but, of course, Keelan was up against Shilton, Clemence, Corrigan and Phil Parkes-in other words, about 5th choice at best!I haven''t mentioned Kennon or Nethercott because I never saw them play, but a lot of people I have spoken to/been at matches with reckon Nethercott was the best ever City keeper and remains thus. He must have been brilliant!!

Syteanric 1 Posted June 12, 2007 Bryan, Bryan Gunn, he''s got no hair but we dont care, Bryan, Bryan gunntop keeper! one of my all time heroes (behind Iwan Roberts and Ruel Fox) I was a goal keeper myself so modelled myself on Gunny. an example of how good a captain a gaolkeeper can really be. Gunny used his voice well and as the keeper can see all the pitch could Marshall the team from the strikers back. Many people would of been destroyed by what happened to Gunny''s little but it showed the courage and the guts of the man to come back against QPR just a few days later... And "that own goal" vs Ipswich.... how many players careers would of nose dived after a mistake like that in the biggest match of the season? Gunny rose above that and earned himself a testimonial to boot. Great Keeper! great man... LEGEND!jas :)
