7rew 0 Posted May 10, 2007 Smith agrees is press speak for the reporter said "a billionaire investor saying he had grown up kicking a ball around the streets of Minsk and dreaming of Ted MacDougall would probably be quite intoxicating for ordinary Norwich fans"- which is a statement that it is bloody hard to disagree with. Sheagreed, but qualifyed the agreement with the stuff about long term bestinterest, in case it becomes neccesary for it to have become qualified.Canny operation by both interviewer and interviewee in order to get the guardian a story - and you swallowed it beautifully. In fact in my opinion your posts are meant to be provocative in an attempt to cause more divisions.Something else you may wish to consider is that if your recent anti-board rants are in fact the truth then those ''ordinary fans'' were quite possibly right in wanting Worthy to stay. 7rew 0 Posted May 11, 2007 SoB - unfortunately I cannot persent more that a close arguement on the luinguistics. I spotted this due to too many years reading both the Guardian (know their style) and Private Eye (not just the cartoons or funny bit either - all of it - causes cynicism about journalists). Here is the arguement:"Smith said" gives a stronger emphasis to the quote than "Smith agrees" which means it is more of a story in the first form than the latter. This is something that an editor is likely to notice, with their preference being for as many direct quotes as possible. However editors are also consious of libel laws*, so will not state something as a direct quote when it wasn''t. Since journalists take notes/record interviews any quote during an interview will be provable in court, so not potentially libelous. This leads me to conclude that the exchange in the interview was very, very likely to be:Journo: Ms. Smith would you agree that "The prospect of a billionaire investor saying he had grown up kicking a ball around the streets of Minsk and dreaming of Ted MacDougall would probably be quite intoxicating for ordinary Norwich fans"?DS: Well.... yes, I would, .... But it wouldn''t be in the clubs long term interest. This is my detailed arguement - but I feel that the language suggests the probability of it being a direct quote from Delia is extremely remote.Short of requesting the notes of the interview it is impossible to be any more certain than that.(*even in a case like this where being sued is unlikely - letting itthrough could lead to bad habits, and their bosses know this!)
