We're not good when we score first.

Recommended Posts

According to ITV Footballs website, we have the worst record in the league for converting games where we score first into points.  We''re the 6th best team in the league at converting games where the oppositions scores first into points though.  Does this tell us something about our team ?  Do we sit back too much when we score first, attempting to protect our league instead of extending it ?  Should we play like we do when the opposition scores first when we score first, if you follow my meaning ?  Or is it just another case of statistics proving anything you like ? Maybe I should have titled this "Worst in the league at converting leads to wins". Or "1st Wizard Cluck and Smudger are girls." Might have got a few more peoples attention.  I thought it was interesting anyway.

"DELIA DOES A RUNNER!".........Would have certainly grabbed everyone''s attention.......followed by a little apology the next day (the size of a postage stamp) on the inside back page amongst the mobile-phone adverts......to say that you were actually, wrong.[8-|]

It is interesting and at first I found it confusing because it takes strong character and leadership on the pitch to come back from a goal down to win the game. But further investigation will show that the five games we did win after falling behind were both games against Luton, both games against Leicester and the home game against Leeds. I think this says more about those teams inability to hold a lead than our ability to bounce back. Though it says plenty about us that we fell behind in these games in the first place. Grant has seen the problems so lets hope he can fix them.

I think it shows the two sides of our team,  when we go forward and attack we do have some talent and can win games;   once we have gone behind we have to attack,  gain some momentum and confidence and can pick upi points.

Conversely I do think we sit back on a 1 goal lead.  Sadly over this season the midfield have not been good at protecting the defence and team have found it easy to score against us.    More isgnificantly it highlights the significant lack of back bone and confidence in the side that when we conceed an equaliser we struggle to regain momentum to take it back again.

We neither have the ability nor the work-rate to defend a lead.

The midfield has performed below average, as has our defence, and we have three forward players in Earnshaw, Huckerby & Croft whom seldom if ever get back to help out.

Individuals with their outstanding attributes aside; every successful football team has to play as a unit and the cohesiveness necessary for the afforementioned to function are seriously lacking within the present set up.

The lack of backbone is mostly apparent in the back four, where lack of confidence in themselves and each other means that the shape goes to pieces, they defend too deep, back off too much and concede dangerous free-kicks. This is the most urgent thing for Grant to address. The statistics aren''t lying in this case - it''s Norwich City in a nutshell.
