nutty nigel 7,963 Posted March 4, 2007

I didn''t remember SOB so I just looked it up. 4-1 defeat at Rotherham! I wasn''t there but for sure promotion looked a long shot! That really was a strange season! Promotion remained a long shot most of the time and we kept losing games before suddenly giving someone a pasting before losing games again. The division had a strange mix, from Newcastle and Chelsea to Wrexham and Cambridge. We ended up nicking 3rd place behind Luton and Watford, it would only have meant play offs these days.Smudger, the first game of that run we beat Watford 4-2 being 1-2 at half-time. John Barnes scored for them and they had Luther Blissett who was prolific. The real catalyst was that we resigned Martin O''Neill from Man. City in the February. We went to Leicester towards the end of the run and won 4-1 and that result was massive because at the time Leicester were above us with games in hand as I remember. Ricardo - maybe 10/12...... wet blankets are for putting out fires! [:P]
No, realism. We will be a lot more than 10 points off.I see 6th as 75-80 points and us as 55 to 60 points
We both could be right Ricardo mate but I predicted our final points total would be in the 60''s a couple of weeks ago. People who claimed realism at that time were claiming a lot less than your 55-60. I admit to being a dreamer but my dreams have been more consistent than some of the realism on here! Alex Harvey-Jones 0 Posted March 4, 2007 Really can''t see us making the play offs. We would have to put in an awesome run for the rest of the season against some of the top teams and still rely on the teams above us slipping up big time! I think a finish in the top half is the best that can be expected and would be a good result considering our form of late!
Stevie Wonder 0 Posted March 4, 2007
Unbelievable post, most surprising some people actually give it credence. Have you actually seen the forthcoming fixtures, apart from Ipswich every game is against higher clubs. I guess when we get to the dizzy heights of 14th you will be bitterly disappointed. Just be grateful the team is showing some fight at last.
Whilst I would agree that any play off chance is remote indeed, I would make a couple of observations; In 81/82 we won 10 of our last 12 games to pinch the third promotion place.Regarding your reference to our forthcoming fixtures, I would merely point out that in general our best results have been against the top sides i.e one of only 2 teams to win at Brum and WBA, 0-0 draw at Derby, 2-2 draw at Wolves, home wins over Cardiff and Preston.Just a couple of observations thats all............ Ark 0 Posted March 4, 2007
With 44 points from 34 games, 12 left, another 36 points available, that''s a maximum of 80 points. You usually need circa 75 points to guarantee a play-off place. Can anyone realistically see us dropping just 5 points in the next 12 games? I think not, so, unfortunately, it''s a BIG NO from me.
Nice to see someone actually doing the maths... This is a ridiculous ask... We''d almost need to score as many points in the final 12 games as we have done in the 34 played so far. I''m pretty sure that''s never been done by ANYONE! inspector 0 Posted March 5, 2007 Can''t knock you for your optimism but it''s time for a reality check. 15 points or so off the play offs, as well as us winn ing our games, we need all the teams above us to start playing like smurfs in order for us to overhaul them. Unfortuneately, our season was ruined after the board started the season with the wrong manager, add to that our very small injury hit squad, we have to bite the bullet and prepare to see the same teams next season. on the plus side, we are now bringing in some good players and i think that next season will be much better for us. ZLF 342 Posted March 5, 2007 Making the play offs would need a change of form akin to the nag on the beach winning the derby 3 weeks later - it aint going to happen, as much as we may want it to. As welcome as they have been the last 7 points have come against teams who were all in and around us in the league, ie struggling. The goal from the rest of the season is to try and gain a clean sheet (it seems both doc and shacks played very well on sat) and win more than half the games left, as that is still a big improvement on where we were, will boost confidence and hopefully gain the consistency needed to succeed in this league. Our part in this is to cheer the boys on tomorrow night and try and make it three wins on the bounce and 4 games unbeaten in the league for the first time since that bizzare run in Dec 05. Couldn''t agree more. I think that the best that we can hope for is for the team to build confidence and mutual rapport, ready for a serious challenge next season. The last week has admittedly been against struggling teams (though I seem to remember quite a few comments about Barnsley''s upturn in form and their two Hungarian strikers giving us less than a snowball''s chance in hell of getting anything from this game) and tomorrow night provides an ideal opportunity for our lads to prove that they mean business and prove that they can challenge with the best in the division.I am very much looking forward to it and will certainly be cheering them on!!
