Do any NCFC players smoke?

I have heard Mark Rivers did, which might explain his level of fitness.
He certainly did - i remember being astonished when i found that out. The guy could hardly ever last 90 minutes on the pitch and we all wondered why he couldn''t reach the same levels of fitness as everyone else. There was the answer. As someone else says, it''s not like anyone else just having a fag - it is their job to be as fit as possible. Smoking restricts their ability to carry out their job, fact. Ergo, if i was manager and anyone in the squad smoked (apart from the odd one while out at night), they would find themselves with a simple ultimatum. Give up or get out!
What, so if you had a fully fit Ian crook in his prime in the current Norwich City Squad you would give him the boot would you???  Would it not matter that he is ten times the player of Safri, Etuhu and Fotheringham put together???

I do not believe it is as black and white as the picture that you paint above!!!
Football has changed enormously in 10 years with emphasis on fitness more important than ever. If you believe that Crook would last in a modern day match, even at his prime, you are sorely mistaken.
If you think that Chippy wouldn''t hold his own in this City team then that sums up your knowledge of the great game...

If I had to choose between the two then I would plump for class over optimum fitness every time!!!
Don''t get me wrong. Crook had more class than any of our current squad. However do you really believe that Crook would last 90 minutes of the modern game! You obviously have no idea of the role of dieticians, sports scientists and sports analysts have in the game since they were introduced by progressive managers like Allardyce and Wenger. I suggest you look into it my friend...

Fair enough, Canaries Canary, but all this science stuff hasn''t exactly set the Canaries on fire over the last decade.......

Perhaps it all boils down to the fact that class is class and always will be.

Very true, however all teams now have the "science stuff". My main point is surely you want the players in the best possible condition and surely this means no smoking!

Nicotine is a drug. I should know as I was addicted for 35 years. Would some people be so tolerant if we were talking about a different drug on this thread?

Although I will stand up for anybody''s freedom of choice I think that as role models to young people footballers have a moral duty not to smoke.

Why? Smoking is not illegal is it.

It would be a lot better if we stopped putting footballers on a pedestal and just accepted them for what they are, human beings who just happen to be better at kicking a ball than the rest of us.

Having said that I can''t believe that too many footballers smoke in this day and age, what with the physical demands of the modern game.

No, smoking is not illegal and I did say that I would stand up for anybody''s freedom of choice. Just because I don''t smoke at the moment doesn''t make me intolerant of people that do either. In my job I am surrounded by smokers and I guess I share there ciggies with them.

However, to have seen footballers smoke then by definition they must have been smoking in a public place. This will be illegal in a few months anyway.

I stand by my comments but will rephrase them just for you Shack Attack [;)]

I think as role models to young people footballers have a moral duty not to smoke in public places.

Have you noticed a pattern on this thread? The players listed as smokers in the last 5 years, Rivers, McVeigh, Mulryn and Abbey. All players who didn''t live up to the hype.... Interesting...

Bit unfair on Zema - he had so many injuries smoking wouldn''t have made him any less fit!As for Smudger''s ''you have no knowledge of the game'', well even Chippy would admit he rarely set foot outside the centre circle. He was by no means a ''runner'', that''s for sure, so I think you''re being a bit harsh...

Players shouldnt smoke, but they do. Its like players shouldnt drink but look at them all. On that note id like to say anton ferdinand is a numpty. To say your nans ill is a bit sick in the 1st place but to do it so you can go on the lash when your teams fighting relegation makes him t@@@@r of the year.

you are dead right canaries canary. scottish managers are the best. Fergie, dalglish, moyes and look what a great job steve mcclaren is doing for scotland with england.

I think mr ian shipman you will find i said at the start of the debate  at 11.53am yesterday i said that they are no different to us, they do a job and go home and have a fag.I aint said nowt about they cant go out, most people think that if you are a profesional sportsman you are paid to look after your body and i agree to a point, but what anton ferdinand done is repulsive. How anyone could lie that a family member is ill { in antons case insinuating it was serious } appalls me.
