No matter how much we score...

Recommended Posts

our defence is bound to let in just as many goals.

As sad as it may sound, it''s very, very real.

I do question why Grant hasn''t decided to loan a defender - saying that he may be trying - i do not know obviously.

One thing - i sure hope we do get atleast 1 CB on loan, and buy one for the forthcoming season - where i think play-off''s should be given a real go at.

Thanks,

hogesar..

As I''ve argued elsewhere on this board, while I think that with money we could improve on every member of the back four. But the problem is not due to them exclusively, or even mainly. As Tuesday evening reminded us, we have been leaking goals mainly because of a midfield which does not mark properly at set pieces and does not close down opponent midfields. The proof is that a relatively low proportion of goals against us are scored by strikers, - almost as many are scored by opponent defenders and midfielders. (Shacks/Doc & Co. are pretty effective at bottling up strikers, as Howard found!) Compare that with the record of our own midifeld, who collectively have scored relatively few.We may have learned to mark better at set pieces, but we are not marking or closing down opponents as we should. Unless there is an improvement in the defensive qualities of the midfield, I fear that any acquisitions in the defence would make a very marginal improvement, and certainly not enough to give us promotion probability.

Is that why we''ve lost every single game this season.

You do realise we''ve actually won and drawn games this season - that sometimes the defence doesn''t let in more than we score. Do you need a list?

True, but do we ever look CAPABLE of not allowing a goal in? We always seem to be edgy.

I agree - the defence has been poor for three years now, if you don''t concede a goal you don''t lose the match. Again we have one of the worst defences in the league.

It''s not just the defence. Quite a few of the mistakes are being made from midfield too. I thought the defence stood up well against Derby - the two goals scored against us came from errors by midfield players!

it is the midfield, and the defence.  U watch the best 1-0 sides, (derby, everton), just drop to 2 banks of 4.  We are not capable of doing this, but i think it will come, with some additions both in defence and midfield, and coaching.

I really disagree with loans though, the season seems done, unless injuries, or dire crisis, we seem to be heading safe, and far from promotion, and i do not want money wasted on more loans (zesh rehman, and the rest last year), save the cash for the summer expenses, and hey if season is done, blood spillane!!
