JuanVelasco 27 Posted January 15, 2007 If anybody on this forum could genuinely say that on 1st September 2006 (one day after the deadline) they thought this football club, with the squad of players we had at this point, had any chance of a promotion - yet alone a top half of the table finish - then they are seriously deluded. It was evident to many of my friends and I, who all frequent carrow road, that this was a squad of players that would struggle in this division. The form of teams in this division is relative to the extent to which they have changed their squads. Cardiff, West Brom, Birmingham, Stoke..... they all invested in players.Nigel Worthington, Neil Doncaster, Delia Smith.... whoever you choose to lay the blame with, had ample opportunity to invest in both young and talented players. Michael Chopra 500K, John Hartson 500K, Jay Bothroyd Free. Just one half able striker would have had a hugely positive effect on our season. (example, the ability to play 4-4-2 regularly and the non constant reliance on earnshaw to score every bleedin'' goal)So Peter Grant, a man with ambition and experience of working with a talented squad of players at West Ham, joins the club. What does he have to work with? The same underfunded and unmotivated squad of players, the players that can only show as much ambition as their employers allow. With very little, or even no, scope for change of tactics or team sheet, what exactly could grant have done to stop the rot? If he chose to play 4-5-1 its because we only had one talented striker. If the defence is awful its because he had no back up left back, a long term injured back up right back, a past it back up centre back (fleming), a goalkeeper that has very little aerial ability. The one and only mistake that Grant has made is the ommission of safri from the squad. He simply does not have the players to banish the deadwood to the reserves.... he has had to use Hughes, he has had to use McVeigh, he has had to use Robinson...... So, what has Grant done to rectify the situation? He has bought a versatile midfielder (chadwick) and a striker to enable him to play 4-4-2 with Dublin in defence. He has admitted that he wants a GK and is linked to a talented attacking centre midfielder (Edwards). Those that are seriously seeking the sacking of Peter Grant only serve to underline exactly what has created the sacking culture within football, he needs the chance to make a change, those that are not willing to give him a chance are only being seriously detrimental to the future of this football club. Most of you will agree with me, the others are moronic.
