Blinded by Goals!

Recommended Posts

It seems to me that many people on her only seem to want to see a Stricker or a Goal scoring Midfielder come to the club. One post even stated we should sack grant for trying to get a decent Goalkeeper ( a Goalkeeper who has played in the Champions League and saved a penalty from Ronaldinho i might add ), If we start to keep clean sheets we will win games! Its not all about how many goals a player will Score in a season its a team game.If a goalkeeper saves us 20 goals a season extra thats just as valuable as an Earnshaw! Also the same has to be said with regards to link up play, we may not have a midfielder who scores a lot of goals but there link up with Earnshaw has been good at times, if this was not he would not of had the chance to score 17 goals this year and it should be more as he has missed at least as many sitters! My wish for jan would be a solid Goalkeeper and a Solid Centre back and build from there.

And thats all i got to say on that!

My mistake i have those rose tinted glasses on again, I guess it must be seeing too many of the Grant /  Board out posts on here! As it happens my birthday is April 2nd so i''m very used to bad April fools jokes!

Despite what ''SACK GRANT NOW'' post said, you have made a very valid point duke, i will be greatfully to Grant for pulling off such a coup if we get David Marshall as he is a future star and full to the brim with potential and as you said, goalscorers are essential but keeping clean sheets is just as vital. It''s a team game, some posters just don''t realise this!

I don''t actually mind about a goalscorer. I think if we sign a couple of decent midfielders who can create chances and boss the centre of the park then with Dublin and Earnie up front, goals will flow a-plenty!

I would welcome the aquistion of a goal keeper because personally I am not impressed with Gallacher , I thought Grant was harsh on dropping him before he even got a good look at our number one but now is the time to bring in someone else. Gallacher is a handy shot stopper but he doesn''t command his area at all against Southend I was sitting right behind the goal and but for a couple of "Come On Lads" shouts he didn''t manage the defence at all, I hope whoever we bring in is someone that is going to organise the players in the box because at the momment Dion is the only person doing that.

Don''t forget that we need a central defender or two as well. What with Dublin going upfield and Fleming possibly being sold/released. A goalkeeper (in particular, Marshall) is a good step in the right direction, but we do seem a little short of specialist central defenders, albeit at least to put pressure on Doherty and Shackell, if not immediately going into the team.

I see that as being the main problem with certain squad members/positions, in that some of our players don''t have specialist people challenging them for their places so aren''t in any great hurry to push themselves to retain the shirt.

An example could be Drury: (I''m not Drury-bashing though, honest...) in that there are no other specialist left backs at the Club so he maybe only has to put in 80% to know he''ll retain the shirt. If there was another left back at the Club, surely Drury would have to push himself that extra 15-20% to know that the jersey is his. Someone like Hughes just isn''t going to be viewed by Drury as a direct threat to his place.

And worryingly, there are many positions in our squad that this appears true.

Sorry to hijack the thread to make my point, you can have it back now ; )
