Is this the time!

Recommended Posts

As things have worked out we are short of players, Is it not the time to sign Chris Sutton, he can play in a number of positions. It must be NOW as he is not match fit and it will take a few weeks for him to get in shape, after the snub from NW (Not noted for his man managerment skills) Chris  may well decide he does not want to play for City but l don''t think this will be the case.

As he is now unattached he can be signed at any time.

Bring out your hoary chestnuts...

[/quote]Not much of a supporter of the idea, but do we really have any other options left? do you have any better ideas ZLF?

Think that is a very good idea, the player is obviously waiting for something appropriate to come up, probably thinking about past glories but what a player!!

could be our only option if earnie gets injured, personally see nothing to lose here, but wouldn''t be holding my breath on it.

He remains available and I too would love to see it happen;  but the manager has made his position clear so its a dead duck and has been for weeks.

It seems we have four options

1.   Carry one with the squad we have and bed in youngsters

2.   Do 1 and sign a couple of short term loan players, including any Etuhu type loan and buy deal.

3.   Sign out of contract players

4.   Encourage players to buy out their contracts so we can sign them before Jan.

Both 1 and 4 are unlikely, with 4 beig expensive (any buy out would have to be ''repaid'' in increased wages so expensive) and 1 risking losing the momentum we have.

3 is unlikely - players tend to be out of contract because they have either priced themselves out of work or simply are not good enough.

Which only leaves loan signings, with the short term committments, financial pros and cons and negative impact of permanent staff.   There is a limit on these and one would have to be set aside for a true emergency GK injury etc. All have a max signing period of 3 months, unless we can get another Etuhu scenario.

We need to think who we are most likely to need, who is available, likely to sign and playing prospects.  Can we agree what is our most pressing need?  At the moment probably not, but a striker maybe.  however at the moment signing a striker while Earnie is fit and we are playing 4-5-1/4-3-3 is not going to be very attractive to any decent striker  -as such do we count it as an emergency situation and go for broke with a bigger reserve striker from the prem if the worst happens (see who is available at the time - eg Kuqi)  Defence and midfield are pretty threadbare for us.

Personally losing Croft is the most damaging.  WLY is not a natural covering Croft and his best role (off strikers) does not exist in this formation.    A right flank cover, for a player who remains young and so likely to lose form during the season seems sensible, as does cover for any of the midfield 5.   Players from Spurs, Arsenal or West Ham may be available.  The same in defence - loaning a left footed player who could do full back or centre would be a decent shout.

James Collins, Shaun Newton, Huddlesone, PhilipIfill, Todorov, Andy O''Brien, Johan Djourou are possible names or some of last seasons promoted players like Glenn Little for example.  Most of these will want to play though.
