Two striker targets are gone

Recommended Posts

Most people will be relieved that the club have not spent silly money on Howard and Hulse, not least because many feel that they would not be much of an improvement on what we already have.

But were there no other targets - fullback cover, wide right? Unless you are going to play hoofball, by-passing the midfield, do you really need a target man? We were confronted by some massive strikers last season, but generally they were not the teams who put three or four past us.

The teams who really tore us apart were those with effective midfields, cutting through our ineffective midfield almost at will. I am sorry but Robinson and Hughes are not up to it, and Etuhu may be improving but is well short of the best in the Championship. An injury, or other absence to Safri and we are likely to to concede shipfulls of goals again! Or will Spillane or Rossi be thrown in at the deep end!?

If the manager had any sense, or listened to his advisers, here and elsewhere, he would see that the gaping need is in the central midfield! And we still have no-one willing or capable of playing wide right.

Given that we have a proven goal scorer in Ernie who doesn''t want the ball high in the air, it would make more sense to pay for a good central midfielder who could interact with Safri and McV, to provide balls along the ground.

Totally agree Salopian.

It may have been just how the article was written, or the reporter asked the questions. But if our top target for the summer was a striker then Worthington obviously believes everything else in the garden is rosy. It also shows that buying Earnshaw - without having the adequate player to play alongside him was foolish with the amount of transfer funds we would have available to us after his purchase.

Worrying times - the vast majority of fans who go to the games (not the ones who don''t and listen to the rubbish that comes out of Worthington''s mouth in post match interviews - yet still choose to believe what he says instead of the 20,000+ others who actually go ) know where the weaknesses in the team are - but yet Worthington still wants a striker .... tells you alot doesn''t it. You can have as many top strikers as you want but if you can''t get the ball to them you aren''t going to win anything..
