Most Underacheiving Season Ever??

Recommended Posts

Considering the amount of money spent and players we have do you guys consider this season to be the biggest underacheivent you have by norwich??

I cannot remember a worse one in my 20 or so years supporting the city, some of you guys probably can??

What a bizarre assertion. How about ''96/''97, ''97/''98, ''98/''99, and ''99/00? Or did you seriously prefer the football we were playing in those dismal years?

I wouldnt call them underacheiving really oldboy, looking at the squads back then - Shaun Carey a regular..... Che Wilson, Adrian Forbes, Paul Dalglish, De Waard, Derveld, Adrian Coote, Che Wilson, Lee Marshall, Keith Scott, peter grant, victor segura, Ged Brannan, Mike Milligan, chris llewellyn, Daryl Sutch.  we had a few promising youngsters in O''Neil, the crippled Eadie and Bellamy.

Certainly no 3 million pound strikers and Darren Huckerby''s along with international midfielders, goalkeepers and centre halves!!

This season we have had such potential, if only we had managed to build upon the promotion squad....  but we didnt.

My first match was 35 years ago and I have to say this is the most dissapointed I can remember feeling at the seasons end, as for next season I just can''t get excited either. I wish things were different but that''s the truth.

I agree with Foghorn, they were not under-acheiving seasons, more like the end of an era for an ageing squad (Gunn, Crook, Polston etc) and the beginnings of the new era (Bellamy, Kenton, Fleming and so on)

This season has definitely, considering the money we have, attendances etc, been the most disappointing I can remember in my 13-14 years of supporting Norwich.

I would say the season we were relegated with Deehan/Megson.  The season before we had been beating Bayern Munich and playing good football.   At Christmas that season I doubt anyone was looking at the bottom 3 and thinking, we could be in trouble.

We spent a lot of money that year too.  £4m in summer on the likes of Newsome, Bradshaw, Adams and Milligan.

Yeah, but I bet you felt this way when we finished 8th three seasons ago. It''ll pass.

For me, in forty odd years of watching City, this has been the most depressing and like John, for the first time ever I feel absolutely no excitement at the prospect of next season.

IMO the answer the your question Old Boy, is also Yes. Obviously I would prefer not to watch dismal football at all but if I have to (and Worthington has provided more than his fair share) then I''d prefer to watch our home grown youngsters provide it than the useless lumps with half million pound price tags which have supplied it this season.

In the years you mention we still at times tried to play football, even if we werent very good at it. Worthington''s negative approach to the game makes for shocking viewing and is IMO is utterly unacceptable.

no money...injuries to key players...young players brought through...

there''s no comparison for me...those seasons were far better

[/quote]Two seasons - the first relegation from the prem season when we still had a very strong line up of playes, the second season being the season after we were relegated when we again had quite a few good players in the side more than capable of turning in premiership performances and simply didnt. Some people have suggested that these two seasons have been a mirror but I would argue that they cant really mirror a club on the brink of becoming something more than an average prem team to sweating it out in the first division.I am not sure for certain but I seem to remember we still had quite a few of our heroes in that team. Fox, Gunn, Crook, Goss etc. We were not short on the reliable prem players that had got us 3rd.

Certainly the most underachieving season for me. I started supporting Norwich after we were relegated from the prem the previous time. The first season we were in the first dividion was pretty bad but not quite as much of an underachievement as this one I think.

I am by no means a supporter of Worthless, but I have to say that the assertion that this is the "most underachieving season ever" is a bit of an exaggeration.

I dunno actually, we had a good start that season, but went off form after christmas, it was disappointing.  Funny how that team managed 8th!!  This season we have been consistently poor throughout.

I agree with Saint, the relegation season 10 years ago was very disappointing, especially considering we were top half around christmas.  Thats what you get when you sell all your strikers and don''t replace them properly however.
