Earning the right to play??

Recommended Posts

I am pleased to see Worthy has adressed the issue of our hoofball in the EN

He addresses "this whole issue of pretty football" and informs us that "pretty games are few and far between in the Championship."

Instead its all about "fighting, scrapping and earning the right to play."

Sometimes apparently that can take up to an hour and then you can go and play your football.

What total and utter, utter rubbish this man talks. What hope do we have of us ever playing decent football again with that being the attitude of the man at the helm.

Apparantly you have to earn the right to play in the first 30 minutes. But for the majority of the season while we have been earning the right to play the opposition has scored and left us with a mountain to climb.

Someone should try playing football from the first minute to the last, it might just work...

oh come on Foghorn , you always see Arsenal hoofing the ball up the pitch for the first hour before they start playing ! Completley agree, utter nonsense from Worthington .

Its incredible really, isn’t it! The man must have a terrible memory! We won the league playing nice football, keeping it on the ground, letting Hucks have a free reign to run at defences.  Reading have strolled it this year doing the same.

He seems to have become obsessed with the scrappy teams in the league like Brighton, Millwall and both Sheffield club, forgetting that the teams who are up there and challenging are the ones who are actually playing football!

Knocking it from our defence to theirs for thirty minutes doesn’t earn you the right to play, either!  Look a the first 20 minutes against Burnley – for the first 20 minutes we dominated by passing the ball around and keeping a high, attacking tempo.  It was only when we resorted to hoof-ball, or “earning the right to play” as Worthy calls it, that we looked hopeless.

The man’s an idiot, frankly!

Agree CJF!

Of course you have to compete physically and not shirk tackles but this whole ''earn the right to play'' thing is yet another one of Worthy''s favourite, glib, meaningless phrases. Basically it is an excuse for poor quality football. The most disturbing aspect of all this for the future though is that far from trying to change the focus to concentrate more on playing good football, there are clear signs recently from what he has said to suggest that there will be even LESS football played next season in favour of MORE ''fighting and scrapping''. Worthy has highlighted that as the main requirement ''to get out of this league'' on more than one occasion.

How many times this season has it taken Reading to ''earn the right to play''? Certainly not ''up to an hour'' as suggested by Worthy as often being required!

Couldn''t agree more Foghorn. With the money we have spent we should have players who are capable of playing these teams off the park not kicking them off. The point you make a bout scrapping for the first 30 minutes is so true. Look at the number of games this season where we have been scrapping while our opponents have been busy scoring goals in that period.

I wonder if the board of directors read this rubbish and see it for what it is or do they swallow it hook line and sinker.

Spot on!  Judging by Worthies comments if Arsenal were too play in this league they would get relegated as they don''t kick people they play football.  If this is where he wants to take the club Delia and co need to get him out ASAP before his ''Kickpeople/hoofball/Football'' empties Carrow Road for good!

An extrordinary peice of drivel.  I dont see how hoofing it back to them earns you the right to play??  Surely it gives the opposition a chance to play??

Arsenal are teh exception, they have world class players such as Henry, we don''t. The majority of teams do not play like Arsenal, even Chelsea were labled as long ball merchants, teams like Bolton have to scrap it out...unless worthington signs henry or someone similar it ain''t gonna change.

I particularly like the way he talks about "this pretty football" business with such disdain. Almost as if there''s something agy or girly about playing nice little passing patterns!

This public statement of his philosophy alone should be enough to set alarm bells ringing at board level although it seems nothing does so i won''t hold my breath!

Worthy states "I guess there is one, big point that needs to be addressed on the back of last Saturday''s 2-1 win over Leicester City - this whole issue of playing pretty football.

Because, as far as I''m concerned, pretty games of football are few and far between in the Championship."

My main problem with the article is that, yes you need to battle, but what has whether you play passing football or hoof it got to do with battling??

What is the problem with being quick in the tackle and passing it when in possesion rather than hoofing it??  He has skilled players (apart from central midfield plodders) whom can pass the ball. Preston and Reading pass it???  whay cant we??

So what you''re saying is its not ''An extrordinary peice of drivel'' and ''its all about "fighting, scrapping and earning the right to play."''.

You could save yourself alot of money by just arguing with yourself without going on line, or maybe you want to display to the world how mad you are.

nah, its drivel - it can sometimes take up to an hour to play football - utter tripe.  Preston passed us off the pitch from the first minute and they werent fighting and scrapping, they just denied us the ball by passing well
