Wonder if Brazilian tactics in the World Cup will revolve around how long they have to spend earning the right to play?  I''m imagining a blackboard with some diagrams on it...the squad huddled round hushed silence discussing the words of the wise guru worthington...30 minutes he says? 60 maybe? then, aah, at last we can play our pretty football..

P''raps they''ll only bring Ronaldinho on once they''ve earnt the right to play- The 4th official will hold up a big card with ''Congratulations you''ve now earned the right to play you can stop hoofing it up to the fat goofy lad, Mr Kaka'' ...

Can''t wait...

quite a simplistic view of football tactics being shown here. Brazil are one of the very few teams in existence who, befire the match has even begun, have earnt the right to play due to the extremely high calibre of their players. Without doubt as a group of individuals or more importantly as a team, they can operate at a higher level than their opponents.

Barcelona (including a fair crop of brazilians) may be another in this caregory and Real Madrid (and their crop of Brazilians) in the early part of this decade also had earnt the right to''play before kick-off.

So while not being unanimous, all other teams will approach the game with the mindset of ''this is what we would prefer to do, but the opposition may do that, so until we see whether either team has gained the upper hand, we will adopt a wait and see policy''.

This is why teams work on formations and changing formation. It is pretty pointless sticking to a rigid 4-Diamond-2 if you are getting murdered down the flanks or playing a 3-4-3 against a team playing 3 up front against you.

Most people have a pretty simple view of tactics - WE will do this, THEY will have to do that and WE will overcome all and win! Tactics must be fluid and adaptable. The choosig of the subs is vital to being able to change tactics.

Scouting ahead of time gives an indication of how the opponents will play - their tactics. We generally only see our opponents on the day. Pro teams scout 3 or 4 games ahead. From that a generalised view of how oppnents play will be formed. It would be folly to go into a match totally discouting what the opposition will do. You must plan to deal with their threat!

Playing long ball may not be considered ''pretty'' or ''necessary'' but it may be an effective tactic in terms or relieving pressure from the defence, of gaining territoy, or putting the opposition defence under pressure. Chelsea can play direct, Man Utd are not shy of playing route 1 either. Given that statisticall most goals are scored in 3 passes or less, having the ability to play direct is vital to team tactics.

Winning is what elite sport is about!

Playing pretty and winning is utopia!

Playing pretty and losing , well, in fact is for losers!

Yeah, thats all well and good rocky, so how are Norwich Playing?? Earning the right tio play is bull. Yes you have to win the ball, but why do you HAVE to hoof it for 30-60 minutes (in which time the opposition has scored against us)?  Surely all this does is give the opposition a chance to get it back.... long passes to the flanks are much better, but as worthy has signed league 1 standard players we have to hoof it up too 2 midgets...

like the post Rocky!! Adopt the tactics to win the game, pretty or not.  Prestons manager after the game said, the games not about pretty football it''s about winning.  The simple fact is that you have to earn the right by beating the opposition at their game.

Some people like to see five or ten passes to get out of your own half, I call that ping pong, I say get into the other teams 18 yard area as fast and as direct as possible on the ground and make the opposition worry about your four or five potential strikers in their box.  Earning the right IMHO means winning the ball and keeping it, and it makes sense.  Some players can hit a direct pass to a players feet over a long distance 30 or 40 yards as long as we have players who have an understanding and make themselves available and find space to recieve the pass.  Earning the right to play means simply that you earn the right to win, and that you have to work harder than the opposition however you choose to play.

I agree, but we dont have players who can pass it...  We just have a poor midfield!!  end of problem..  We have lesser Central midfielders and no Right midfielder - if we had a koumas/idiakiz we would be in the play-offs in spite of worthy.  But they are not worthy type players.
