hogesar 10,934 Posted December 1, 2024 What a comeback from fans wanting to tear up his contract in the summer! Taken on real leadership responsibility and whilst yesterday wasn't his best game, his play for the third goal was fantastic, especially the disguised inside pass. Ironically, shortly before that apparently fans were shouting at Duffy in paticular to get it long and giving him some stick. He gave some back to the fans behind him just before he created that goal! Must have been sweet... I think he will ultimately keep his place for the rest of the season.

The Great Mass Debater 1,244 Posted December 1, 2024 This too. Many people wanted him out of the club after this https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cy08yx5r304o#more-menu-button
The Great Mass Debater 1,244 Posted December 1, 2024 (edited) Duffy did say he was more than just a stopper and was capable of being a ball playing defender https://www.pinkun.com/sport/interviews/24632734.city-defender-shane-duffy-defends-ball-playing-abilty/ Edited December 1, 2024 by The Great Mass Debater
Coneys Knee 1,062 Posted December 1, 2024 (edited) Let he without sin cast the first stone. He’s allowed a private life and we all do stupid things and have made silly mistakes I’m sure. As long as he keeps performing on the pitch that’s good enough for me. Fair play to him for cracking on and doing his talking on the pitch. i like him and I bet he’d be great to have a beer with. To be fair he did give some proper money away the other week after some youngsters beat him at darts down the local 😅

It wasn't the failure to kick it long, the bloke had a funny few minutes where he miscontrolled an easy pass and mis-hit two straightforward short passes within about 90 seconds, so there was some understandable vocal frustration that he bit back at. He was great before and after that heads gone phase, to be fair. Possibly his best game for us this season.

king canary 8,912 Posted December 1, 2024 This is the perfect role for him- he's a ball player but not the ball player in defence. An obvious upgrade on Hanley when it comes to being the more physical of the defensive pair. Be interesting to see where Cordoba fits when he's fit- do we go back for Doyle at left back or is it between him and Cordoba for the spot next to Duffy? Nice problems to have as the cliche goes.
Capt. Pants 5,144 Posted December 1, 2024 Yes Duffy has turned it around this season. There are other factors and circumstances that have helped: 1. Not playing alongside Gibson or Hanley. 2. Not having McLean/Nunez playing so deep (behind him). 3. Doyle and Fisher being very comfortable on the ball, probably more so than Stacey and McCallum/ Giannoulis were in this league. glory.win or die. 274 Posted December 1, 2024 Maybe its a bit similar to how Wenger changed how Tony Adams played. He seems to bring the ball forward more, and looks a goalscoring threat. There was a 10min spell in the 2nd half when he struggled, gave the ball away 2 or 3 times, passed straight out of play inder no pressure, then had a right go at Gunn.. I think i even saw him have a moan at some grumbles from The River end but i kinda like his anger..saw it when it went 2-2.. Given Borja basically has free rein and is pretty awful defensively it’s like there’s no one on the left defensively sometimes.

lake district canary 4,875 Posted December 1, 2024 I don't think we have the best central pair at the back and think we could do better. I don't think we have had a great pairing for years and hark back to days when we had players like Klose and Zimmermann, superb professionals and role models, who didn't admittedly get a lot of games together, but who were inspirational players with those they did play with - Klose often with Hanley and Zimmermann with Godfrey. Other solid pairings over the years- Watson/Bruce, Forbes/Stringer, Butterworth/Linighan, Mackay/Fleming. Some good individual players apart from that, but a good established and CB pairing that is something we have missed in recent years - imo. Can Duffy/Cordoba be that pair? I hope so, but goals against and some of the uncertainty at the back when playing out, suggest there is work to do there.....

Nice problems to have as the cliche goes. I think Doyle will go back to LB. Fisher might miss out for a little bit, until Stacey's form dips a bit and he'll be straight back in. Not saying that's what I'd do but we clearly struggled to play out via that left hand side with Fisher having to cut in and Sainz was a frustrated figure for large chunks of the game.
