Chrisene; underrated?

Recommended Posts

I think he has been decent in most games he plays.

Surprised that JHT has been so reluctant to use him - I think he is a better left back (not defender) than Doyle.

He must have been pretty miffed to see Fisher (who admittedly has been brilliant) play out of position instead of him.

Will be interesting to see who is selected in next game.

A balance has to be struck between developing Chrisene, our own player, and someone else's; Doyle.

The 'problem' goes away for now with Cordoba's injury as Ben will hopefully start at LB.

Don't think it's a case of him being underrated more one of getting him up to speed and developing him properly.

Absolutely this - the whole point of developing a player is coaching and bringing them on. Inevitable that during this process there will be some good and bad. Big question always is - do they have the potential and right attitude

Ben C has been effective at LB and fewer errors than those around him, distribution generally good.  I did see on one occasion giving the ball away on Tuesday, other than that he was very good for such a young player.  Needs to nail down LB and in on Saturday.  Need to find another position for Doyle, a rest for Cordoba maybe he needs it.

Not sure how accurate these stats are.  I don't remember him dribbling past an Ox at any point for starters.

You think it's all bull?

Lots to like about Chrisene, he looks like a McCallum upgrade, a fairly dogged sort in tackles and a fair physical presence.

He's ok at LB but Thorup has already hinted the problem is more tactically, he can't do the Doyle job of tucking into midfield, at least not comfortably ,as he doesn't have the touch or control or comfort on the ball for it.

We've adjusted slightly for being without Fisher and putting Doyle at CB where our fullbacks have still taken up inside positions but not given so much responsibility on the ball, which is easier to do when you have the likes of Mclean back ,and Marcondes happy to take the ball from them.

He had a great game on Tuesday and there was a moment where he took down a long ball, possibly a goal kick, absolutely sublimely. Can't remember if it was first half or second half, but it really flew at him and he got it under beautifully. I think he's a better left-back than Doyle personally. I think our best back four is Chrisene, Cordoba, Doyle, Fisher (although Stacey is making a real claim at taking back the right-back berth) but Thorup seems reluctant to go for two left-footed centre backs, or rates Duffy higher than Cordoba.

Seems a bit odd if we're now saying Chrisene doesn't suit the tactics being deployed given it was Knapper/Thorup that signed him in the first place.

He's represented England since U15s so there's a player in there, and probably more defensively capable LB than Doyle. It's up to Thorup to make it work. Same with all the other young players.

I think, as JHT appears to, that our best back four for the system is Fisher/Duffy/Cordoba/Doyle. Behind that in the pecking order Chrisene probably sits behind Stacey as well. Saw nothing on Tuesday to change that. But it is a squad game, he is young and he did well for a third choice LB. Worth noting that even against a weak Plymouth he lost more ground duels than he won.

He can whip in a cross so well. He did it a few times on Tuesday. It's only a part of a wing-back's game, but it's valuable.

Ox is just 'oxes expected'. It didn't actually happen. Just like xG really.

I totally agree with this view.   I suspect Ben is actually fine with the game time he is getting.  I think he is on course to play 25 games in the season, which is far more than he would have played at Villa.

He is probably disappointed that he is behind Stacey, I suspect that is his personal challenge this season that will see his game time increase.  After that he needs to learn to drop into that midfield slot, or into CB when required.

I suspect it was always planned to be a learning season for Chrisene. Which is why we went out and got Doyle, proven and comfortable at this level, to pick up the slack whilst he develops

I think Fisher, Hills, Cordoba, Chrisene is a real shout for next year's first choice back-line.

I would like to see Chrisene get more game time. It’s more important to develop our own players than those on loan from other clubs. I think we should start with the same back four against Luton, and when Cordoba is fit put him in place of Doyle
