Matt Juler 215 Posted November 5, 2024 And never guess who the referee is at Hillsborough tonight... https://www.sheffieldwednesday.news/news/sheffield-wednesday-handed-referee-for-norwich-city-clash-who-dropped-major-howler-that-went-viral/
Europe_93 51 Posted November 5, 2024 And also some great officaiating by Tim Robinson....😀 I usually think about probabilities rather than absolutes when it comes to human decision making, so... Without bias, Ipswich pen 8 times out of 10 given, Phillips 7/10 booking. With bias, great decision....

It confirms how disconnected the officials are from actually playing the game. I know it has been said before, but having some sort of incentive to get ex-players officiating would surely improve quality.

Not going to happen when the ref's, even the Ipswich video above and an ex-ref in Gallagher, will lie in the face of everyone to protect their "mates" - the above example is bad enough but when Mike Dean admits to not correcting an error because he didn't want his mate Taylor to get stick, then the player's aren't going to respect them. When we now have Forsyth out injured for a potential red card challenge that the ref and linesman just appear to miss, their inability to do the basics of their job, they're always going to struggle to get respect. TheGunnShow 7,462 Posted November 5, 2024 Interesting that the crowd didn't instantly celebrate the ball going into the net there. Often get a few going up with shots hitting the side netting, but that one was very quiet.
Google Bot 3,993 Posted November 5, 2024 Didn't a Newport player lift the bottom of the goal up to make it appear that it didn't go in too? I'm sure I caught this being discussed on radio earlier. But the camera cuts away at the moment where it looks like it occurs.

Or you can look at it the other way round: they're always going to make mistakes when they have 22 players plus the benches screaming in their faces and trying to con them for 90 minutes, only to be furious when the opponents' attempts at conning the ref prove to be more successful. The first, and most obvious, step to improving officiating standards is to clamp down on the behaviour of players and coaches towards them, because how it is now only makes it harder. Petriix 3,248 Posted November 5, 2024 If you just had a simple rule to allow the fourth official to watch a replay and correct obvious errors and anything the ref "didn't see", that would be great. Refereeing isn't as easy as people make out but a few tweaks could go a long way to make it easier.
