The Taliban

Recommended Posts

3 years on from the exit of foreign forces from Afghanistan. It's strange that the western world doesn't seem particularly bothered about what is happening.

https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/global-development/article/2024/aug/26/taliban-bar-on-afghan-women-speaking-in-public-un-afghanistan

https://www.amnesty.org/en/location/asia-and-the-pacific/south-asia/afghanistan/report-afghanistan/

I regularly hear that Islam is a peaceful religion and a power for good. Hmmm....

Why should the West be bothered?

We collectively spent trillions fighting the Taliban and building an Afghan army, only to see them decimated by corruption and fall apart the minute western forces withdrew.

Frankly it’s not our problem. We’re not the world’s policeman and any attempt to be one has invariably made the situation worse. If the Afghans don’t want to live under those animals then ultimately it’s up to them to sort out

What exactly do you want us to do? Start another war leading to the deaths of thousands and thousands? Trllions were spent trying to turn it into a decent, democratic country only for them to bend over and accept the Taliban the second we withdrew. The Taliban is what they chose and what they want. They dug their own grave.

What utter tripe! The people of Afghanistan absolutely did not choose the Taliban. The Taliban took over the government of Afghanistan by force, against the wishes of the people.

Yes, I very much doubt any of the female population of Afghanistan is particularly happy. But I doubt that many Muslim woman anywhere in the world are happy either.

There are 57 Muslim countries in the world. Only 5 have a fully functioning democracy and women are treated as second class citizens in most. The Muslim population in this country says little or nothing. Our Government says a lot about inequity in Ukraine and the Middle East but they are silent too.

Apart from the fact that this is totally unacceptable, the cost to the human race could be huge. Who knows what some of those women are capable of? One could be the modern equivalent of Marie Curie or Rosalind Franklin and if so we're all suffering the consequences.

Asking what we can do is perhaps a valid question but at the moment we're doing nothing. We could at least speak out.

Unfortunately doing nothing may be the best thing we can do.

Of course it is tempting to speak out everytime one sees injustice, there's a natural instinct in many of us to want to help, but is speaking out going to be helpful?  The Taliban are not going to be lectured by us,  but might they do the opposite to make a point about their sovereignty?  Even if they don't would China or Russia use what we say as yet another example of the 'imperialist west' seeking to impose their values and colonialism on the global south? Of course they will.

Hard as it is, maybe we just need to give this the Nelson approach and raise the telescope to the missing eye?

But you didn't answer CC's question, what exactly do you want us to do?

You want us to send in troops (those working-class boys that on another day you describe as far-right thugs) to be killed because it makes you feel superior? Why don't you volunteer to go and support the free speech rights of Afghan women, if it's so important to you?

Meddling there wasn't wise beforehand. Slightly different country but you could go straight back to Mossedegh in the 1950s - basically, the UK and US just got absolutely greedy and wouldn't pay Persia a fair price for oil. Mossedegh had sound objections and rightly wondered when that mineral wealth was going to enrich his populace, and then in came the coup d'etat.

And since then, Iran's been on the way to being the theocratic ****hole we have now. Interestingly, the US government admitted in 2013 that, basically, they fecked it.

In declassified document, CIA acknowledges role in 1953 Iran coup | CNN Politics

I shouldn't need to mention the power vacuums and aftermath of what happened when Saddam Hussein was deposed.

You should know by now that’s what Horsey Weinstein does. He’ll take a brief 5 minutes break from reminiscing about all the young students he coerced into bed during his lecturing days, come on here and throw out a few personal insults to anybody who doesn’t share his opinions, then disappear again.

Now write to me personally with your name and address so that I can direct my solicitors accordingly to sue you for your accusations of rape. I suggest you remove those comments immediately and apologise before I contact the Pink Un and demand your details. I will give you until 9pm this evening before I begin to take action.

So you never managed to chat up the young women then? Fair enough I’ll change accordingly.

I never once mentioned rape, that was your doing.

I’ll assume you’ll now retract the numerous unfounded accusations from yourself of me being racist, in this new found spirit of cooperation?

I know, threatening to call the police is a nice touch though isn’t it.

Normally you’d say the police have better things to do than nick people for jokes said online but we know that isn’t the case. If I’d made a death threat against a schoolboy who scuffed a holy book I’d have been fine mind you, they’d have simply chatted to my community leader who would have put it down to passion and all would have been forgotten about

You called me "Horsey Weinstein" (in reference to a convicted rapist) and said I "coerced" multiple students into bed. Perhaps you are too ignorant to understand what the common meaning of the word "coerced" is, and particularly don't understand the legal definition of "coerced". Coerced means to force someone into an act against their will. That directly implies rape.

As I expected you don't possess the grace or decency to apologise and admit your allegation was a disgusting lie. For libel and defamation to be in play an accusation has to be unfounded. You have made many posts for which the term racist is appropriate and true. Provide me with examples where that has not been true and I will apologise.

You have still failed to remove your vile post, and if that remains the case I shall report you to the police and take appropriate legal action seeking recompense for your disgusting defamatory comments

At last, a thread where everyone gets on without controversy. A refreshing change if you ask me.

To be fair, someone's put in an opinion so dense on Facebook I said anyone who believes the crap he wrote (he said that childbirth should be compulsory for all women who can do so) should be forced to drink a bottle of Domestos.

And frankly if anyone says something on those lines to my face, I'm straight-up telling them to off themselves.

For your information your continued behaviour has been screen shot. The idea that accusing someone of being a serial rapist is just a joke is both cowardly and pathetic and will not constitute any defence in a court of law.

Fixed it for you petal. Who knew somebody so fond of throwing out unfounded smears, accusations and insults would be so sensitive when it comes back the other way.

Don’t think you’ll have much joy in the courts unless you dox yourself, and if you did that there’d be a strong argument that it was a self-inflicted wound.

I’m worried now, the Sweeney are jumping in the old Rovers. Has the name been surrendered yet? I’ll catch up on Breakfast News tomorrow.
