Oh no, missed that. Paddy rated Long a 4, think that’s being very generous.

Paddy didn’t rate him anything - it was Seaman, whose ratings are always a complete lottery, who has those bits on the main site.  I think he has a couple of dice that he uses.

This! Posters saying we should have played a youngster instead of Long need to think about the likely result. If the coaching team think Long is a better bet, then any young keeper would be more likely to make mistakes than him, have their confidence badly dented and not get picked again for a long time. I can’t see how that encourages their development.

We have to trust their judgement - we’ve specialist coaches who clearly think Long is ok and the best bet.  I seem to have been labelled an apologist for him - it seems mainly because I don’t slate him, but I just don’t tend to do that to players. I don’t think he’s great, but nor as bad as most; my main point has always been that I’ve seen Gunn play badly and cost multiple goals in games with barely a mention, and it feels extremely unfair on Long to criticise any and every match he plays.  But I guess it’s also the way of things.

Steady on, I don't think the Archant budget stretches that far.  He throws the same one twice. 😉

Not a particularly good watch but I will take a point from a Preston side who were on a decent run of form
Not overly impressed with Forsyth,Macondes or Crnac Sargent first touch when the ball is played to him is not always good.

Just admit your defence of Longs ability is bonkers.

Seaman is decent, and has always comes across knowledgeable on Pink Un podcasts. Disparaging comments, and wide of the mark.

For what it's worth, I think it's crazy that local journalists are scoring the players out of 10. Leave it to the nationals who don't need to foster a working relationship with the club and players.

Cordoba only got a 5!

I don’t agree. He’s conceded 10 goals from 17 shots on target this season. Goals regularly hit the “middle” of our net when he plays. I think it’s a big problem. It undermines everything when the opposition score with one in two shots. Genuinely don’t think Mair or that other U21 keeper would be worse. Think there is a good chance they’d do better.

Cordoba wasn’t great first half.

The issue with rating players out of 10, is generally people assume 6/7 is average. It’s not, really is it. 5/10 is ‘average’ which I think is accurate over the 90 mins for Cordoba.

Get your head out of your backside and you might realise there’s more than one player on the pitch, you tool.  I don’t rate Long particularly highly (nor Gunn tbh), but will support him as that’s what we are meant to do; meanwhile your dislike of him is weird.

Edit: Paddy usually gives his match ratings and they are much more considered and nearer the mark, rather than kneejerk rubbish.  His articles are always tonnes better and worth a read. Seaman has a lot to learn.

The other thing we have to sort out is Doyle’s positioning if he’s going to keep playing left back. I think it’s a deliberate thing (some sort of inverted full back role) rather than him ignoring instructions but he is leaving so much space down the opposition right hand side and he doesn’t have the pace to recover. It’s great when we have possession as it gets him involved more but defensively it’s a problem.

We could adapt the wine scoring system of the American Robert Parker, where he scores up to 100. but starts at 50, which raises questions about the standard of teaching in the USA (although anyone voting for Trump does that more).

Using this system Long scores 70 out of 100, which sounds much better. Cordoba would be 75.

Oh, do get a life.  Bonkers isn’t meant as an insult?  Maybe look at your own posts before trying to claim the moral high ground 👌

Spot on. He was nowhere for their 2nd goal (well no man's land actually) and equally woeful at Stoke for a different reason.

Even if Doyle were a CB you would be concerned by his lack of pace but playing him at LB is a 100 times worse.

Look at the majority consensus on here RE Long. Are that many wrong?

You’re under the strange misapprehension that I think he’s really good.  I don’t particularly, but nor is he as crap as is being made out. For balance, I don’t think Gunn is as good as is made out, either.

No, I just see a person criticising fellow fans for questioning Long’s ability, when the body of evidence suggests it’s valid. Weird.

Long looks like exactly what he is - a below average championship keeper who doesn't play much and as a result is rusty when he does.

The goal at Stoke wasn't a howler, but he'll be disappointed to be beaten from range and there's no way a Premiership keeper or a good Champs keeper concedes that, imho. The goals last night, again not howlers but he'll be disappointed no doubt.

If you gave him a long run of games, pardon the pun, I actually think he'd be ok for this level. But as always some of our fans need a goat and expect to see the second coming of Lev Yashin.

Oh, well I see someone defending a player from ridiculous levels of criticism.

I find it weird that I’m called out mid-game because Long made a mistake.  If that isn’t weird then nothing is.

He had that at Millwall. They dropped, and then released him.

That’s because your defence of him is, well, bonkers. When he can’t do the basic GK requirement of shot stopping very well, which leads to soft goals, he’s rightly criticised. Fans are frustrated.. then you try and criticise them. It’s antagonistic.

Oh yes I don't dispute that - looking at his career he has played predominantly at League One level which is probably quite telling.

Personally I think some of the stick he's getting is over the top - we missed chances at Stoke which could have won us the game, last night, from what I can tell, a draw was probably a fair result.

Wow - and there was me thinking this was a discussion board!!

I’m not sure where you think I’ve been criticising fans - I’m happy that everyone is entitled to an opinion, but that does also include my own, which thankfully differs from yours.

Nonetheless, I’ve been posting here well over 20 years - it is rather tedious if no one has an alternative view, isn’t it?  Some get it, you obviously don’t.

Nice to have Sam back for one match, PNE match report.

It was an incredible start by the hosts and the in-form Canaries were no doubt shellshocked, although they soon got a foothold. Sainz gave the Lilywhites a warning sign in the 43rd minute as he bent an effort just over the crossbar, however he found his ninth goal of the campaign with the last kick of the half, as he got a touch on Sam Byram’s cross to sneak it in at the near post.

In terms of fairness, you're probably not wrong. But I think with a different goalkeeper we could have "unfairly" won the game!

Ultimately though, Preston created much better quality chances than we did despite them only seeing 30% of the ball. Which is a much bigger problem.
