So this argument bugs me.

I'm critical of Long, not because I think he should be as good as Gunn but because the drop off from first to second choice is extremely steep in my view.

Without meaning to get bogged down in stats again, I looked them up from last year in a previous thread and Long ranked something like 53rd out of 57 goalkeepers who'd started a game in the Championship that season for goals conceded vs their xG. That stat obviously isn't the be all and end all but I think its pretty key. So by losing our first choice we're going from having someone in the top 10 for his shot stopping to someone in the bottom 5 which includes a number of other teams back ups.

Yes I’m not defending Long overly as I think we are about to start appreciating Angus a whole lot more.

The only other Southwell mentioned is again I suppose is a defence is that it’s hard to come in cold as a goalkeeper. I remember Tim Krul looked miles off it when he first arrived but after a difficult start started to look more and more settled. Long and reserve goalkeepers in general do not get that luxury.

Looking on the bright side, if Gunn leaves in the summer we're unlikely to be able to afford better and the gap between 1st choice and Long won't be as great 👍.

Long's contract suggests to me that Gunn is unlikely to be here next season and he will be our no.1 keeper. Unless of course one of our young keepers suddenly comes from nowhere to change Thorup's mind.

I would be amazed and very worried if Long is our number one next year. I'd say he is just about good enough as a back up (if we have a reliable and not injury prone number one) but nowhere near the standard we need as no 1.

(Mind you - surely we will be spending some of our premier league riches on a goalkeeper better than Gunn next year when we're promoted 😉 )

He’s not a very good back up on the field - obviously a good chap off it hence the new contract. But he’s a million miles off being good enough to be a regular starter in this division. His stats are awful and he does cost us points- 2 v stoke imho

Honestly if anyone tries to defend him after this performance I'll start to believe they are either blind or a member of his immediate family.

A better keeper and this game is 0-0. Not even debatable.

The fact that people did defend him up to this point baffles me. He can’t shot stop. Just hammer the ball at him at any opportunity is the message to any opposition forward.

Which is quite unusual, really.

It's not exactly uncommon to see a goalkeeper who is s good shot-stopper but has other flaws, often the tendency to drop clangers.

But it's very rare to see a goalkeeper who is so poor at what should be routine saves.

Simon Tracey was better than Long!

I'm starting to think if we'd given him more than one game Theoklitus would have proven better than Long

I think that even just off the basis of Theo's solitary appearance, it's at least questionable which is better.

One wonders if, with a decent No 1, we would have won at least one of this game and the last one.
