When was the move to permanent numbers, though? About 94? I mean, I'd definitely put Eadie, Fox and Disco Dale above Sainz since they did it in the top flight, but I suspect that Fox and Gordon were pre squad numbers...

Don't know, but given the random nature of some squad numbers it then becomes a bit strange as you compare Sainz with Mulryne or Jarrett.

He compares well since 2015 but pre that there are some very decent players.

Worryingly none of our no.7s had particularly long shelf lives, 2 or 3 years at most.

Hucks being a number 6 never sat easy with me

I had Fox 14 on the back of my shirt back in the day!

Had a feeling it was 14. Fox was such a number seven, though.

Agreed. Also, Stacey wearing 3 is an obscenity.

Byram (and maybe Whittaker?) had the same thing going on. Every season I would wait for it to be rectified, and it wasnt! Which has led to our left back taking the 14 shirt >:#

First player I think of when you talk about number 7's is Jimmy Neighbour.  Some better players over the years, but he was an iconic in the old fashioned sense of a number seven - an out and out winger.

Based on that list it’s Bob Snodgrass given the permanent numbers probably coincided with the premier league.

Rashica, Roberts, Marshall and Naismith?!  Just as well Sainz has done well otherwise we'd have had to retire the number 7 as cursed based on recent history...

Ian Crook.

There are some great players on that list, Borja deserves to amongst the great ones. Comparing different eras is always difficult.

I've just looked at Milo Rashica's stats for Besiktas; 7 appearances, 1 goal and 4 assists for this season, 29/5/5 for last.

Don't know enough about the Turkish league and if it's much higher standard than the Championship, but with a bit of bias I might think Sainz is the better player at the moment?

4th row down.

He is saying no, Sainz isn’t the best. That accolade belongs to Darren Eadie.

He’ll obviously be getting Lakey’s vote.

Nah - he'll be trying to convert Dorrans to a number 7 ...

(Sorry Lakey, couldn't resist ...)

Certainly based on performances in yellow Sainz is hands down the better player.

Looking at the list of 7s, for such an iconic shirt number we haven't had many 'greats' that have made legends of themselves in it.

If we can keep hold of him and he can keep performing to this standard he could make that shirt his own

Nah, from that list Darren Eadie would be my choice.
