The Angus contract issue...

Recommended Posts

Haven't seen this covered elsewhere, sorry if I missed it. The article on the Pinkun doesn't paint the brightest picture about his future here beyond the summer:

https://www.pinkun.com/sport/interviews/24624994.angus-gunn-focused-football-amid-city-contract-chat/

He's using the past tense a lot, and hasn't said anything about wanting to stay:

"I've really enjoyed my time here from when I was an eight-year-old coming into the academy, then getting that year back on loan when Daniel [Farke] was here - that was a really nice feeling," Gunn said after Tuesday's draw against Leeds. "Coming back again, I've really enjoyed it. I had to work my way into the team and build my game up, but that's been really positive. I want to concentrate on the rest of the season and hopefully let my football do the talking."

Clear that Hoff wants him to stay, but nothing in this interview suggests that Angus feels the same way.

Not good news. Perhaps his contract is too expensive. Imagine he must be one of, if not the, top earner.

Maybe it’s a case of we don’t see a big sell on potential value so won’t match his wage demands.

Be a real shame if he goes, he’s been great.

Where would he want to go? Doubt a prem team would come in for him. Leeds perhaps?

I imagine he could probably sit on a Prem bench for more money and a nice sign on bonus.

Assuming he wants to be number one somewhere, I'd be very surprised if a Prem team were really interested. Then again, he'd be far more privy to the interest in him than any of us.

I personally sit in the 'he's a bit overrated' camp. Great shot stopped but still not a commanding figure. Saying that if we're a Championship side he's a good option. Running his contract down is his best chance at a move- he's not good enough to attract bids from Premier League teams and most Championship teams wouldn't meet our valuation so he's much more likely to get multiple options on a free.

Careful what you wish for. Long hardly fills you with confidence and our young keepers haven't been tried out yet.

If Angus does go we'll need to bring in a proven GK.

Makes you wonder if he's already been tapped up. Celtic or Rangers possibly.

If he wants to stay but just wants more money, why would he not get the fans on side by saying 'I'd like to stay but it depends on the contract negotiations'. Also why use the past tense so much? It's neutral on the surface, but reading between the lines it doesn't sound like someone who's keen to be here. Whoever mentioned Scotland, Kasper Schmeichel will be 38 next month and Adam Idah is now at Celtic... so if anyone fancies a conspiracy theory... 😉

Exactly. Is hardly going to fall over himself fawning over the club when he is negotiating a contract. It's in his interests to play it cool.

Yeah, fair point.

Fine by me - I still think he’s a bit hit and miss, Mair/Reyes are definitely the future.

The last contract Mair signed was for one year (with a +1 option), the same deal that was offered to Sorensen. Does that really strike you as "the future"?!

What do you think about Caleb Ansen? Do you think he might be good enough to join the first-team squad next season?

Keepers are 10 a penny. Watching him cr@p himself during the second leg of the playoffs last season he isn’t one of the ones I would be fearful of losing

I thought Dylan Berry was likely to be next-in-line. Clearly I'm no expert!

Ansen seems so bulky I just don't know. Is he good enough with the ball at his feet?

Certainly Reyes (bottom of D3) and Barden (near the bottom of D4) will be seeing plenty of the ball this season.

I’d like Angus to stay, but surely our academy has at least a couple of good goalkeeping talents coming through the ranks? At one point in time, it was the main position that our academy really excelled at – with several good players emerge. Long certainly isn’t the answer.

If we make the prem he will want to stay and we could afford his wage expectations.  Beyond that I suspect we can get better value with a cheaper keeper and adding striker options.

I suspect, as with mccallum, getting wage value will be remain the priority for the next couple of windows.

He’s hardly the past!  I was meaning those as  ‘for example’, so you can add various others if you don’t want Mair.

Based on his previous time here when he went to Man City and we had to fight to get compo, I wouldn't expect any kind of loyalty personally.  He'd be off at the slightest sniff, which is a shame when you consider that we've been the platform for him to rebuild and has ties to the club.

He's a good keeper but I wouldn't say outstanding, I've not seen Reyes out on loan but he came with quite a bit of promise?

Edit: I see Reyes has conceded 16 in 8 games for Cambridge.  😳

Good ol' Gunny eh? Probably just making sure he gets a better contract... Right?

I think several on this thread are underestimating Gunn's importance.

He's not perfect, of course. He'd still be in the Premier League if he were. But he's a top Championship goalkeeper, he's still only 28 which is basically the mid-point of a keeper's career, and it'd cost a lot of money to replace him.

He has saved our backsides an awful lot over the last year or and signing him to a new deal should be near the top of Knapper's priorities, in my opinion.

Not really sure the previous time here was too much about him. Wasn't he 15 and his dad (who had recently been unceremoniously dumped by us) got a job up north. Yes I guess he could've stayed but was probably heavily influenced.

some might say that the Biggest issue will be his agent, who just happens to be his Dad. It’s alleged he was touting him around last year to the likes of Birmingham when Rooney was at the helm as Rooney is managed by the same agency (Triple S Group).

it’s was also alleged Gunn Snr was hoping that Gunn Junior would  have a good Euros and would be ripe for a move after that, but we all know how that panned out.

Was about to say the same thing- I don't think blaming a 15 year old Angus for that move is very fair.

He will be staying.

Its all a bit of a play on words to ensure he gets the best deal by not nailing his colours to the mast.

You can almost hear his personal manager ....... " say this, that its a great club but dont go too far else you might get £5000 a week less in their offer "

OK so he's 28, clearly he'd like to play in the Premier league, but I can't see him being signed for a starting position by a Prem club.

So his options are to run down his contract and move for a free to a Prem club as backup.

Or move to another Champs club that he thinks will start him and has a better shot at promotion.

Or stay with us.

Either way I can understand him wanting to keep his options open for now, it wouldn't make sense to sign a new contract and rule out the other options.  The risk as with any player is that he has a career-ending injury in the meantime, but that's always the risk. Also as time moves on, we'll need to start thinking about a replacement who would be first choice.

Also as has been pointed out, there's no way we'll be able to sell him on for a profit at this point in his career, so that must be reflected in the contract he's being offered.

I'm not expecting anything to be decided soon on this.

Gunn is stuck in a hinterland with us where he's not good enough for a Premier League team to want to sign him but too valuable for another Championship team.

His best chance at another shot in the top flight is being with a promoted team. If he does leave after this season I'd imagine he'd be looking for a move to a Leeds type club, as I don't see any Premier League team signing him to be number one and he's too young to be choosing the life of a highly paid number two keeper.

Long term I could see him back at Manchester City as a backup- having come through their youth team he'll count as 'home grown' for their European squad.
