Wolves left back approach rejected

Recommended Posts

So does this mean we've given up on Man City's Doyle then? Are we beginning to panic in our search for a left back. Surely it's an attractive loan option for some up and coming player?

Seems Norwich are looking for two left backs. One who is comfortable tucking in and one attacking one. The two links to players in Portugal are both more attacking left backs, as is the Brazilian who was linked earlier in the window.

Nothing to suggest Doyle won't be coming to Norwich once he has finished his tour of the US with Man City, but that won't be until the end of the month.

That's fine but I hope we do something positive with Montoia as well as develop other club's players.

2 left backs to replace the 2 left back that left... who'd have thunk it??

Quite, though two loans in the same position would be a bit odd.

Have to say, loaning 2 left backs is questionable, possibly why the approach was rejected? Parent club wanted more game time etc.?

I would of thought there's a decent lower league left back out there for a few hundred thousand to sit on the bench if we really want to loan out montoia ( and Doyle is a done deal )

If we sign one permanent and one on a season long loan, then that frees up Montoia to go out on loan for the season to develop.

Yes that is my thought too. I get we're not flushed with cash unless we make a big sale or two but I'm not a huge fan of being in a situation where we'll be back to square one next season in this position.

Unless we think Montoia is a genuine first team candidate (from what I've seen, I'm not sure) then I tend to agree. I assume we also knew for a while what we were / weren't doing with McCallum and Gini - worst case being once we'd lost the play-off semi.

Norwich were trying to keep McCallum and suspect no final decision had been made by the player until after the play-offs resolved themselves. While Norwich would have looked at options in both scenarios I also suspect they felt that at least one largish out would have been sorted, or close to being sorted, by now.

While getting two loans in at left back isn't ideal, given the lack of money it may be a necessary step for this season, in the hope there is a money to spend on the position in the future, or Montoia can step up after a loan spell.

It could also be that we are hearing the rumours out of sequence, and Norwich made the offers for Bueno, before securing a provisional agreement for Doyle, so Knapper doesn't want two loans, or is only looking at one additional left back with Montoia staying (the least likely scenario in my opinion).

The squad rebuild was always going to take more than one window and there seems a bit of a shortage in decent full backs at the moment. Better to find a temporary solution and wait for a good permanent option than tie the club into a contract with a player with too great a risk of not succeeding.

I haven't read through the rest of this but many think of Doyle as a CB really. He can play at LB and has been used there tho.

He played left back pretty much exclusively at Leicester.

Seems to have only really played as a centre back when in a team that uses a back three. He isn't a player that will push forward and get crosses into the opposition box, like an Aarons/Stacey but will stay in the defensive line, or maybe move into a central midfield position when Norwich are in settle possession.

A left back role that "tucks into a three" or "steps into midfield" rather than "bombs forwards" would be an ideal role for Sorenson, I'd have thought.*

*Sorry about 3 cliches on one sentence, but in football parlance everybody knows what it means. 😟

The fact Throup hasn't played Sorenson there yet in pre-season suggests, that like me, he doesn't see this as his role this season. His performances in his cameo at left back under Farke have been fairly inflated. Norwich looked far better when Dimi turned up and played.

Personally I'm not a fan of Sorenson as I don't think he is good enough a defender to be a centre back or good enough a passer to be a midfielder. Interested to see what role Throup does set out for him, although I suspect it will be his natural home being back up in a number of positions.

The list of free agent left backs isn't exactly inspiring- Brandon Williams, a 33 year old Van Aanholt, Matt Penney (who couldn't make the Ipswich squad), or a guy from Dortmund who is on trial for domestic assault.
