Your first game

Recommended Posts

This is quite a poignant thread for me right now.

Norwich 3 Chelsea 0, December 10th 1994 - my first game aged 9, with my dad as well as my lovely sister, who sadly passed away last week 😔 it's a game I always remembered fondly anyway, but it will forever be even more of a special memory for me now.

May 1985, Newcastle (h) 0-0. We were relegated shortly afterwards. Good to realise early on that that was an integral part of the experience.

So I will be 40 years a City fan at the end of this season. Yikes.

My first game was a representative match. Players from the English Football League v the Irish Football League, my first City game was a few weeks later, I'm not 100% sure but I think we lost to Millwall.

If I remember rightly, Kevin Keelan played in goal for the England team

Bury (H) 21st January 1967, att 14,488 and we won 2-0,  Bolland 10 mins and Curran 74mins, Terry Allcock was captain and the ref was changed after 61 mins because of a pulled muscle. Thanks to The Archive for refreshing my memory!

26th September 1964 - a 2-0 home win against Leyton Orient.  My Uncle Des took me and we stood in the South Stand.  Aged 9, I was more intrigued with the noise from the Barclay, where I have largely stood ever since.  Will be celebrating 60 years of hurt/joy/hurt/joy (you get the picture) in just over two months time.

Sad news. Sorry for your loss

Same day as the tragic Bradford City fire which led to the modernisation of so many grounds.

I can't remember exactly what game it was but it was either Stockport or Preston at home late on in the 2001 play off final loss season. I saw both of those games and my memory is fuzzy because I was 7 at the time.

I was an Arsenal fan at the time as a little kid but as soon as I walked from the concourse into the old South stand I was immediately hooked. I'll never forget that feeling first getting into CR,  I loved it, first time in a football ground and I really took it all in. I suddenly lost all interest in Arsenal who I'd only seen on the tv and became obsessed with Norwich, probably didn't hurt that we won both games iirc it was 3-1 against Stockport and 2-1 against Preston but I'd have stayed a fan even if we lost.

I don't remember much from over 20 years ago when I was a kid but that memory of first seeing the inside of CR will always stick with me.

1976/77 v Sunderland. Reeves and Busby gave us a 2-0 lead and with time running out,  they brought on Bobby Kerr, who crossed for Rowell to head the first, then scored the equaliser himself.

Sunderland were relegated the following week at Everton  and we sold Reeves to Man City so we could build a new stand, that's now 45 years old....

First game was against the great Brian clough forest side in 1978. They 3 nil up after about 30 minutes. We game back with if I remember John Ryan and Keith Robson scoring to draw 3-3.

Indeed it was. I went to the NCFC game with my dad. I was nine. Halfway through the afternoon my mum heard the fateful words on the radio, "and we're getting news of a fire at a football ground."

Just like Hillsborough when we were in the other semi-final, that awful sense that it could have been you...

April 2nd 1966 versus Palace. Ron Davies scored the winner if I remember correctly. My dad took me as a treat. Wasn't much of a Canary at the time as I lived in Lynn and followed the Linnets but became a fervent Canary in 1971 when I moved to Norwich - my first game then was against QPR on 2nd October, bit of a drab 0-0 but being in such a big crowd really got me hooked and, of course, it was our momentous promotion season!

April 1972, we beat Sheffield Wednesday 1-0 with a headed goal from Duncan Forbes.

My late uncle was a big fan and he took me to the game as a treat.

Strangely enough, my first away game was 1982 at Hillsborough where we lost 2-1 but were still promoted as Leicester drew their game. My late Dad drove us to that one, along with half of Norfolk (or so it seemed on the A17!).

There were close to 10,000 there that day I believe, so given changing demographics this statement is probably accurate.

Not sure of the date but it was around 1964 when I was about 10. My grandfather drove me there in his old Morris car. We stood at the top of the River End banking. The match was a 0 0 bore draw against Huddersfield. I was hooked and mesmerised by the sight of so many people and the noise. I went with him many times after that. So often since then I have thanked my lucky stars that, living the wrong side of the Norfolk/ Suffolk border, my grandfather could so easily have been a supporter of another lesser, local team and taken me there.

2-1 win against Sheffield United in November 1992, which if memory serves put us 8 points clear at the top of the Premier League.

Different times indeed.

1997, a 1-1 draw with Barnsley.

My brother was going as part of a school trip and my dad decided at the last minute that we should go as we were driving him over anyway.

It had quite a bit of controversy from memory as the referee blew for a free kick instead of playing advantage when our striker was one on one and scored. We then equalised quite late in the game. Fun intro.
