Social workers and police came to take said kid away. Entire Neighborhood gets burned to the ground in riots, with police cars being burned, flipped over and kids as young as 10 and 11 being filmed chucking rocks and bricks at the police. They are, and I'd imagine they were speaking from experience, if not their own then certainly their parents' - when I first came to Leeds in the late seventies riots were a pretty regular occurence (no cause and effect there, purely co-incidental!). Obviously over the years the large scale ones have fizzled out but the potential is still bubbling away quite close to the surface at times as last night showed. From what I've seen of the coverage the burning bus obviously added to the drama but the number of people actively involved was quite small and what struck me quite forcibly was that even so the police couldn't muster the resources to manage it and had to withdraw to regroup and only reappeared when it was all but over. Back in the day there would have been a larger number of violent rioters but they would have been very quickly facing a much larger police presence already tooled up in full riot gear - in other words a proper riot!
