Looks like we are heading into pre season with a real lack of left backs then? Hope Sorensen has been training 😂

Never going to choose NCFC over Italy and Series A, but I'm sure Duda put in a good word for us...

Posted (edited)

Verona's a lovely city to be fair. Ran a PB in the half-marathon there in February last year too (then took it down further in Riga, Lancaster and beat it again in Odense too).

EDIT: Actually, been in the stadium too. Giving it some in celebration knowing I'd knocked over 90 seconds off my old half-marathon PB was the reason.

They also play in the top tier, not the second tier, he gets to play against Inter, AC, Juventus, Roma. Would be the preferred move of 95 percent of players you would think.

Went to watch a Serie A game at Verona, you are literally miles away from the pitch, stadium was about 1/3 full and zero atmosphere.

Sheffield United and their parachute payments, having just released Max Lowe also, will undoubtedly have been willing to pay him more money.

Knapper will have targets for this position, everyone has been on holiday, and there has/is a major tournament, plenty of time to go yet , we only need a first choice in, we have cover if required....

Sam was messed about by us so probably chose to play elsewhere, like others have said united were probably offering good wages and could well be pushing for promotion so would be an attractive gig.

Doesn't bode well if we are unable to afford players of McCallum's level. Fullback is such a key position, especially if we want attacking ones, which neither McLean or Sorensen are.

There’s a difference between being able to afford it and deciding whether he is worth it. Why would we pay top££ if he was earmarked as second choice left back ??

Usual pattern.

Out of blue rumours surrounding a player (usually) unknown.

Player's reputation as being suitable snowballs.

Melt.

Well I don't know who was 'earmarked' as first choice then. If it really was Frese then it feels like a bit of a balls up.

With ageing players like Barnes, Duffy and Onel draining wages it doesn't feel particularly joined up at the moment.

I don't think there's a lot to worry about here. I was surprised we didn't keep McCallum on, but who knows how much of that was down to the player and how much was down to the club. Perhaps there was something statistical that Knapper unearthed that led him to believe that Sam wasn't the right fit for us? Either way, it's history now.

I think it's likely we will sign a new LB, but even if we don't, perhaps it's that Knapper/Thorup really rate Montóia and want to give him a shot... then either Shipley or the new lad from Notts County could act as backup (in the same way that Fisher has to Stacey). With a back four of Montóia, Cordoba, Hanley/Duffy and Stacey, there's still plenty of experience there. Plus, as has been said, Sorensen can cover any back four position too.
