We should probably have a pre-season thread

Recommended Posts

Thought a pre-season thread could be justified given the announcement of today's news that the pre-season away fixtures will have a stream for fans to watch. The price is £5 per match or you can buy a £15 bundle which will cover all four matches. I think that's pretty fair.

As a reminder, here's the full schedule of fixtures (lifted from the linked article above)

Quote

Northampton Town v Norwich City - Saturday, July 13 (KO 3pm)

Club Brugge v Norwich City - Wednesday, July 17 (KO 5.30pm UK time/6.30pm local time)

Standard Liège v Norwich City - Saturday, July 20 (KO 2pm UK time/3pm local time)

Norwich City v 1. FC Magdeburg – Friday, July 26 (KO 6.45pm)

TSG 1899 Hoffenheim v Norwich City - Tuesday, July 30 (KO 5pm UK time/6pm local time)

Norwich City v FC St Pauli - Saturday, August 3 (KO 3pm)

Remember the days when friendlies were free? Good times

I don't mind paying as long as the stream is decent. I remember one friendly that was so zoomed our and laggy it was just not worth it.

Was it last years friendly that was so poor they ended up refunding everyone? At Kings Lynn?

Not sure but I know Kings Lynn complain and moaned to the FA about our fans saying rude things during said friendly which caused us to get a fine.

Which is probably why we are not playing them again this pre season..

Hmmm…that streaming offer doesn’t feel the best for anyone who is actually bothering to go to any of the games… I decided to go to Northampton as it’s Hoff’s first in charge (having had Stevenage tickets cancelled), so that has cost me £16 already.

I don’t quite understand why we have to pay for pre-season streams when so many are provided for free elsewhere.

The pre season streams tend to be a bit dodgy, I might have thought giving the first one free to demonstrate the quality was an idea.

Bottom line is I'm sure many would happily pay the club £5-10 per game for single camera, no replays, without commentary feed *as long as* the streaming quality is there. Otherwise Mr Fawa down the road offers a good enough deal.

I wonder if this being the 4 away games only, and none at home has anything to do with it.  Quality of stream maybe dependent on the home team  (which could vary by game meaning the first one may not be a good signal of future quality) and the club has to pay the home team in order to sell on?

Be interesting to see what happens with the two home pre-season games.

Bit disappointed to see that the international Canaries TV package seems to be the same price as last season (140 pounds assuming I remembered last season's price).  If there are a lot more games on Sky then this likely means a lot more sold onto international broadcasters and so quite a few less actually making it to Canaries TV.

He said in an interview with Paddy that he will make wholesale changes in the first couple of games, lots of subs at halftime etc. We might not get an idea of a potential first 11 until the final couple of games.

Makes me smile people moaning about having to pay £15 for some friendlies but will then stream the entire season from fawanews free without putting a penny into the club.

Indeed. I'm glad you replied on here though instead of creating a new thread 😉

I'm sure they'll still be pre season match threads. 🙄

Is that so though?

Most of us supporters from afar would gladly fork out a tenner for every official City stream.

£15 for a friendly is steep

How much would it travel to say Northampton from Norwich with the entrance fee and food/drink on top?

So if you really want to see that game but cannot afford to travel £5 from the comfort of wherever you are sitting does not seem that bad.............

“Without putting a penny into the club”?  Interesting idea…I don’t suppose you saw the thread warbling on about how high our s/t prices are already, or the news reports about the new Sky deal being bigger than ever for EFL.

I’ll be at Northampton tomorrow so don’t really care a huge amount, but the odd free stream shouldn’t really be beyond the club occasionally.

That’s a better deal than you’d get on any stall at Norwich market.

Preseason games should be free to view - I’ve said it forever and won’t change my opinion. Other clubs do it regularly, we never have.

Maybe before, but now most Championship teams I looked at quickly are charging around £5 per game to stream.

I mean this in the nicest way possible but if you're paying money to stream meaningless pre-season games then you likely need some new hobbies.

Many wrongs don’t make a right, to paraphrase a saying.  Just because other clubs have caught us up in the stinginess stakes doesn’t mean it is correct.

Indeed. But I’m not sure what that says about paying for tickets + train fares to go to the game….part of my excuse is that it is a new manager’s first game and also a new ground for us!

I can understand that a bit more, to be honest. Physically going to games makes much more sense than watching a single camera stream from a training camp friendly.

I don't see why fans have some right to see the games for free personally.

As this is away games only, I suspect Norwich have to pay some money to the hosting teams to provide a stream due to potential loss of ticket sales. Also, from what the Pinkun said, Norwich have had to hire an external company to provide the stream which will obviously come at a cost. I think free streaming of friendlies only became common in the Covid years, now that is over I see no reason why it should remain free.

Pre season friendlies should be free to view imo, it really is quite simple.  I get there might be a cost for the club (why wouldn’t there be), but it does not have to be passed on, it will not be prohibitive and we already pay through the nose for everything else.
