duke63 739 Posted June 6 I think Southgate is throwing all his eggs in an untried basket. To be fair if what we saw the other night is anything to go by, the chances of us winning the tournament are pretty slim.
canarydan23 4,762 Posted June 6 Blimey, fair play to Southgate. A few years late to the party, but he's finally reached the correct conclusion regarding Harry Maguire.
shefcanary 2,955 Posted June 6 Maguire's reaction on X was strangely, word for word the same as the one released by Maddison earlier today. Hmmm .... 🤔
Satriales 994 Posted June 6 Apprently Maguire is injured. Might be a smokescreen.
Capt. Pants 5,013 Posted June 6 Taking Dunk instead of Maguire is a surprise. Not saying it's wrong mind but wasn't expecting that. Potentially one of the youngest England squads I've ever seen.
GJL Mid-Norfolk Canary 2,035 Posted June 6 Dont think Maguire has been dropped more injured. Grealish has been exposed by club and country for the one trick, diving, pony he is
Ulfotto 800 Posted June 6 Yeah not sure I would have Eze and Gordon over Maddison, Grealish, Sterling and Rashford.
pete 371 Posted June 6 Not surprising with this, Grealish was to be expected. He's been second rate all season playing the Guardiola way. Doku has been the far better option on the left, tried to take on opponents and make chances for others. GRealish has never justified his transfer fee, only as the court jester and resident pis artist.
All the Germans 1,239 Posted June 6 Not surprised with Grealish but surprised with Maguire. I'd take Maguire, he is limited but - Stones aside - we don't have any better.
cambridgeshire canary 7,798 Posted June 6 Maguires injured. Grealish is the interesting one. Would seemingly mean he has more faith in Eze and Palmer than Grealish. Could be a gamble, but I do feel Eze is due a breakout season as he's clearly very talented.
Top corner 260 Posted June 6 Taking Dunk & Gomez, whilst leaving Branthwaite out is crazy in my opinion.
Parma Ham's gone mouldy 2,462 Posted June 6 (edited) It’s also about who fits the group. Many of the squad will not kick a ball. You also need types who are positive, hungry and happy to be there anyway. You might only use 17 players the whole tournament. A frustrated anyone isn’t ideal to have sitting around. it’s also common to ‘show the pathway’. It’s logical to fill some 21-24 places with tomorrow’s England players. The issue is that Grealish and Rashford are good on their day but haven't really been this season. I was expecting Grealish to get dropped after Maddison as he's been out of the Man City starting 11 a lot and had his attitude publicly challenged by pep. Never a good look. Sterling isn't seemingly the player he was either. Perhaps he's been found out a bit and is starting to slow down? Maddison, not sure why really. Inconsistency this season? Southgate wants players that can hit the floor running now. Or who can be thrown in and are hungry to prove their worth on the international level.

Well b back 3,605 Posted June 6 Maguire is injured and would not have played in any game.
Samwam27 606 Posted June 6 Southgate is very inconsistent He stated Grealish was dropped because he hasn't played as much, has been inconsistent and that others have played much better. But also picks Shaw, who's had a poor season, been inconsistent, has been inured a large part, and apparently has @[played better then Branthwaite" so completely contradicts himself!. And whilst Wharton & Eze have had good seasons for Palace, to pick them after one friendly game. Still at least like Knapper he's bringing the average age down. First dropping Henderson, now Maguire. We'll have a very inexperienced CB paring though

We'll have a very inexperienced CB paring though If Jack Grealish was a defender and as good he would be in as there are not many options in those areas. Southgate was comparing Grealish to other players that play in the same or similar positions, whereas Luke Shaw is worth a gamble as there is nobody as good to replace him.

I actually like he’s shaken the squad up at bit as other wise it just a collection of players who haven’t managed to get it over the line in the last two tournaments. Let’s be honest though Foden and Saka barring injury will be the wide options

Midlands Yellow 4,682 Posted June 6 Fair play to Southgate, he’s growing a pair. We’ll breeze through the group stage and if he continues to be brave (and stop being Mr Safety First when it matters) who knows.
KiwiScot 1,684 Posted June 6 Interesting collection players I'm not that aware of, but with the core players you know will be starting. Looking forward to seeing Saka, Foden and Bellingham in action.

He hasn't been at his best this season but he has won the Premier League three times in a row and was a key, first choice player for Guardiola in the treble winning season for them last year, notably starting the big games. He wouldn't have played as much football for Pep and Man City as he has if he wasn't a top player but yeah, he's not quite hit the heights of late.

Newtopia 573 Posted June 7 Maddison, and Grealish not making the squad makes total sense, simply based on performances and the quality still in the squad to play those positions. Maguire has to be injury based, his experience at the back would be valuable. Amazing news for Lewis.
