Maybe he will stay and, like Omo, get his chance and keep it. However the first team is NOT a place to develop. You are picked when you are ready. Albeit however good a player is at Colney the prove is on the pitch in a league match. 'Needs must' put Gibbs and Fisher in the squad. I suggest the latter needs a loan, as moving from non league to the Championship is a big leap. I don't think it is too great a leap to move to RB/LB from a central place in defence. Likewise, I think Godfrey started there, or even right midfield. R Martin swapped as well, so maybe one of these CBs could cover for Stacey. Plenty of options, whereas we only have Begga Hall at LB. There must be someone special lined up as we let both Gino and McCallum go. Whoever it is (them?) it won't be another aged stop gap. The olde Duffer has TWO years left on his contract unfortunately! Indeed, it’s almost full circle, Webber came, criticising the previous regime fir wasting the money, leaving us with a poor squad and debt, he changed it, made a big difference, set up correct and the self destructed in eerily the same manner as the previous regime! Now we find ourselves practically in the same boat! At least we have a swimming pool and semi new owners!

We do have better infrastructure now and we had a fun ride, but ultimately, Webber left us in an incredibly similar position on the place to the one he found us in. We had just missed out on the playoffs in our first season after relegation, with an ageing, high-earning squad that needed a refresh. It all started when he hired Smith, because that was the moment where Webber panicked and completely ripped up the plan which had worked for four years by going for short-term fixes. He then just acted like a gambler in a betting shop who had the lost the month's rent money and needed it back before the wife found out; he just chased his losses with more short-term fixes until we were left with Shane Duffy earning big wages on a three-year contract when he was completely unsuitable for so many different reasons.

Great post. Its hard not to look at the Smith hire as a pivotal moment for the club and Webber where everything went wrong. Webber's entire mantra of 'ignore the noise' went out the window as he listened intently to the noise and reacted badly to said noise. It was about as knee-jerk a decision as you get. From then on he was basically at the mercy of the noise he swore he'd always ignore as it became too noisy. Noise.

People become too focused on the player in possession, but in truth it's the players off the ball that make the difference. If you want a ball playing backline then as a coach you have to make sure that there's targets that are easy to play to. This was a lot of Ben Gibson's problem in that he would stand over the ball too long trying to do something clever and would put himself in trouble. Just get people moving off the ball and don't stall, otherwise it won't work whatever. He just tried to find anybody in an invisible midfield . It was the teams problem and not his . Louis Shipley back with us, are we covered with only Hanlley and Duffy using McLean and Lungi as cover ? Not retaining Batth and Gibson suggests one ot two of the above will be stepping up. At the moment Hanley is an unknown quantity, given the injury, and Duffy is not getting any younger. Could we go into the season with just the one recogonised senior CB ? However, no more aged tetainers as per last season. Both Hanley and Duffy are out of contract in 2025 so another year out on loan for some of the above till then. Just need to find a LB or two. Not necessarily. We have a new manager that believes in youth, maybe Hanley and Duffy will be back up

Secondly if the José Córdoba rumour is correct we are looking to add numbers here. Yes I realised that after I posted, but I thought I saw that he was going. I guess the only question is how many of us contributed to that noise. My memory is that the summer 21 transfer incomings went down very well, and that there were plenty of Farke-outers on here. Being almost entirely ignorant of footballers who don't play for NCFC, I had no view on the signings, but I was pretty relaxed about the sacking of DF: it felt inevitable. Not quite sure why I thought we'd do any better than him.

Barnes is a luxury to have at a 10. There must be better, younger, and more effective players than him we can play behind our 9. He is not our future at his age and needs to warm the bench next season.

Blofield Canary 12 Posted May 31 I agree Duffy and Hanley are both slow and caught out by the faster more nimble forwards but they are both decent at championship level and good defenders against the bigger strikers. Don't forget they are both still international players so are not as bad as some on here portray. Either alongside a good young ball playing centre back with Kenny just in front will do me for next season.
ZLF 335 Posted May 31 Both good almost old fashioned stoppers, strong both physically and in the air. Both will be attractive to plentybpf champs team. However their limitations are mobility and thier passing ability which fall far short of what's needed for a promotion seeking aide. One of them is perfect for squad depth but ideally would want better. Right now I would always start duffy ahead of hanley but could swap view if hanleys recovery improves dramatically over the summer. His performances since his return are a pale shadow of the player he has been for us.
