That's my biggest concern,

For example; If we had Wagner pushing for playoffs, whereas Knapper had change on his mind regardless, did he just opt for the cheapest option available as a somewhat token gesture?  Looking at this in hindsight I wonder if Knapper even felt an alignment to Wagner, the lineups or style of play.

The only time it makes sense is if SvH was bought in to replace Barnes as the hold up player, you'd guess that they do a statistical match and SvH is no less mobile than Barnes but he does offer a bigger physical size.  What's not covered is experience and personality of course, which is why Barnes repeatedly got the nod.
