CDMullins 498 Posted May 17 I thought he was getting better and better tbh. Definitely surpassed Dimi for me. and not sure how we replace him for £0

Indy 3,471 Posted May 17 Giannoulis has been bloody awful since his return to the starting line up! McCullum offers so much more going forwards!

canarydan23 4,749 Posted May 17 Don't get the Dimi hate, he's a far better left-back than McCallum and one of the few to escape the last 4 or 5 games with any credit. Hopefully this means he's open to staying on a reduced contract and Montoia is ready to deputise and stake a claim for the position. Might not need to replace him. YellowSubmarine 43 Posted May 17 37 minutes ago, Pyro Pete said: Either that, or Knapper. Sounds more like a 'wot i reckon' comment to me. Why would Sørensen tell people he's well liked at the club by staff and players. And why would that have any impact on Knapper giving him a contract? "Yeah, you're not as good as Kenny, Gabby, Marcelino or Liam. But the tea lady likes you. So here you go, a new two-year deal " Far from “wot I reckon” I only post facts. The club are losing a lot of senior players, for what Jacob is earning and the ability to play across numerous positions aswell as being a good person/pro, you keep people like him around. Don't think Dimi will stay but I agree wholeheartedly. Sam McCallum is fine but only surpasses Giannoulis in the air. Guess there will always be players that get love ins seemingly at random.

Indy 3,471 Posted May 17 (edited) I’m at a loss to why people think Giannoulis is better than McCallum? He was caught up pitch a couple times last night, criticism of McCallum, but he offers very little going forwards compared to McCallum! I suppose it’s like the Barnes debate and Marmite love it or hate it! I want to see a real number 10 again a city Wes or Maddison type not Barnes flapping about like old heavyweight well past his best! I think the club see Montaia as first choice left back & he'll be given every chance to prove himself there. Very highly rated with admirers at other clubs. Back four of Stacey-Adeboyega-Hills-Montaia by the end of next season?
Mason 47 1,908 Posted May 17 Dimi is a better all-round player, as he should be with his pedigree, the question is really of value. For his wages, do we really get the impact of a prime-age Greek International left back? I'd say probably not. McCallum has his assets, the question here being whether or not he has enough of them to be first choice. If not, is he cheap enough (and probably more pertinently, is the limit of his ambition) to remain back up? Seems to be another no. C'est la vie. Dimi & McSam out, stinking rich Chinese left back in? Big O 282 Posted May 17 2 hours ago, Ulfotto said: Although I get the sentiment of clearing decks. Releasing a relatively young left back who has good experience in the Championship seems a pretty brain dead decision to me. I agree on face value with that. I guess it ultimately depends on who comes in as it’s pretty likely we now need 2 new left backs. Some type of wonder youngster hopefully but probably toffollo or Jamal Lewis. Petriix 3,207 Posted May 17 2 hours ago, king canary said: constantly caught out of position You mean constantly exposed by Wagner's flawed tactics. It's simply not possible to provide the attacking width while being 'in position' in the defensive sense. The idea seemed to be that one midfielder dropped between the central defenders freeing them to cover the vacated fullback area. In practice it just left us outnumbered in the crucial central areas. I could rant about it for hours but suffice to say that you can't really blame the fullbacks.
canarydan23 4,749 Posted May 17 Capology has Dimi on only £7,500 (claimed as verified too) a week and McCallum on over £13,000. May have influenced the decision. If Capology are correct and if Dimi is willing to sign on similar terms, it would be a no brainer. Two big ifs though and I suspect both will be included in the release list. JamieNorfolk 81 Posted May 17 Defensively Dimi is so much better than McCallum, but I do think this is a shame if true. McCallum is decent moving forward, his first touch is also brilliant. His aerial presence is awesome, which is an area we really struggle in. His work rate when you compare him to Stacey is miles off though. Overall a shame he's moving on.
Sufyellow 250 Posted May 17 3 hours ago, GRB2 said: Shame if true. If played as wing back in a back 5, we probably would've seen the best of him. Unfortunately he was playing that in a 4 , so took the blame for no defensive midfield cover. But wagner decided we didn't need one of them.

It only provides basic wage, so he might be on a very bonus heavy deal.

lake district canary 4,813 Posted May 17 "I want to stay" is a very simple statement and sounds like he really wants to stay, but it ought to read "I want to stay, but only if you give me more money" - and that is complete;y different. I think there's been too many instances where even with the verified tick (I think someone on twitter done a bit of research and it appears if football manager game series is within the same price point then that qualifies as a tick) capology has been miles out. I agree Gianoullis definitely the better player but he is being released as well, I believe.
chicken 3,081 Posted May 17 3 hours ago, ZLF said: Feels all wage based. Sam is young with limitations but would have signed on a decent wage. Inferior to dimi in all elements except heading so I assume we have a better lb in sight given dimi will also move on. 100% this. McCallum is 24 at the start of September. He is still promising, but probably not promising enough. Folks are suggesting wages, do we know? From his last interview on the subject he seemed to suggest a contract was on the table and he was working hard to earn it. To me, I think that suggests that it may have not been a longer term deal because, as ZLF says, he hadn't really showed why he should be a nailed on starter - which is what we are looking for next season. For a younger player, he isn't particularly pacey either. He certainly isn't rubbish. And as a squad player, probably more than useful. However, I think this is all going to be more about a fresh start again. It may well be that talks have already been had with a head coach. Not only that, the way we work with bringing in players now is that it is done at least with a half a year lead. Look at Stacey as an example. It could be that we could find a left sided equivalent. Then add an U23 who plays the position too. I'm all for giving youngsters the chance, but you also have to be ruthless at times and accept that they may not have made the grade. This was McCallum's season to really make a statement. He's not the only one, but I feel he missed the opportunity, which is sad, but is also part of the game.
